dulling bright galvanized surface

Hi all,
Another non welding question.
What can i do to dull down a galvanized bucket to make it look older than it is?
Ps time is an issue so a process that would not tak months to do, i.e leave it outside for a couple months!!

Have you thought about rubbing it with emery cloth?? and taking the shine off??

t wash.

It's what they use to treat new galv before painting, spray it on, wash it off, etches the galv slightly, turns it darker.

I had thought of some sort of abrasive but wasnt sure if it would wreck the galv or not.

T wash will make it go black and patchy.

It will go dull in a fornight or so if left outside.

If we leave anything at the galvanisers for more than a week, it goes dull as hell. The gear is stored close to where the baths are, lads reckon its the rubbish in the air that does it.

Well as long as the shops selling them put a warning label on about not having fires in them, they should be OK?

I assume LMB was referring to fumes from burnt off zinc, though presumably a fire-starter would'nt be hovering close enough to inhale vast amounts, and would hopefully be outdoors...

Citric acid greys it off iirc, certainly dissolves it away; have done that on small Landy bits I wanted to paint.

The only galvanised thing i have ever had a fire thing ended up yellow on the outside, i presume this was the zinc being burnet off so just a word of warning i have found through my exploits

Do not t-wash it, itll go black.

I would do what I could to accelerate wearing without damaging the zinc, so salt water washes, leave outside for as long as poss, maybe a LIGHT emery cloth rub, but no more than that.

Alternatively, cold galv zinc sprays have a less shiny finish, so you could give it a very rough coat from a rattle can, just to take the shine down a bit?

was just a steel bucket untill it turned into yellow/white snot on the outside

I have t-washed galv'd stuff and it hasn't gone black, but a mottled grey- you have to spray it on and wash it off quickly though.
