gas bottle burner - need some advice

this is the first thing like this i have build and i happy with how it is going so far. it all made from bits i had laying around in the garage.

don't look at my wielding i know i am shocking but it will do.

a few things i need to know before a finish it off
1) do i need a baffle in it at all?
2) do i need a grate or can i just burn the wood in the base of the bottle?
3) how long does the flu need to be?
4) how big should the air intake need to be?
and
5) if i want to use this on decking how high would i need to make the leg so it doesn't burn the decking

I would fit a baffle from about an inch below the flue extending forward for about 3/4 of the diameter of the bottle, rising a little towards the front edge,For burning wood just put a couple of inches of sand in the bottom or let the ash build up,I usually make the inlet the same area as the flue,but able to adjust down,I don't know how high it needs to be to avoid decking damage but I grind off the bottom support ring and split it into segments and re-weld as 3 legs, Have a look at some of my threads to see examples, Also another tip for future,cut the bottle just down the hinge side and weld on hinges taking care to take up the slack of the hinge pins.then continue to cut out the rest of the door to avoid the door sagging when open.

It needs a lip welding round the hotplate, I'd be picking my food up off the floor all the time If you burn wood it will make it's own bed after a couple of fires, just fluff it up occasionally with a poker and take the excess out when it gets to the level of the door.

mmmm smokey mushrooms-i made one very similar a ways back-i made it specifically to burn pallets and have a stainless steel chimeny - after about only sixty burns the chimney was sooted right up! i have built a wire brush on a chain that sorts this out , but my next one will have a baffle and a bigger chimney-i am amazed at how ell this heats my 6x8 metre workshop-i may make some for all my sheds

As I am getting dangerously close to making one myself I have been thinking about baffles. Would a vaiable baffle (damper?) like the air intake, but in the chimney be a better than a fixed baffle? Or both?

i made one and just cut a door, put a chimney on top and away i went, but after about 4 or 5 days burning for around 6 hours it soots up solid. would a baffle stop this?

Well, the baffle stops the heat just running up the chimney - at the very least the soot would collect on the baffle. Sooty fires are mainly down to insuficient air - put a air intake in it at the base of the fire and have something to introduce heated air above the fire if you are feeling trick and want to go for reburn.
