Precision engineers level

I have a couple I've picked up from eBay over the years, both Rabone i think, anyway they have the knurled fine adjustment screws and it bugs me to think a previous owner may have tweaked the bubble. So how do you level a level?

I can only think to go to an engineers which has a well set up surface plate?

I may be completely misunderstanding the question but....

Can’t you just make something appear level with the level and then turn the level the other way 180 degrees and check it again (sorry, too much use of the word ‘level’)?

I'm not too sure how you could go about it.......i bought one because i thought that was the point of them.

My milling machine table is out a bit so i put the level on it and adjusted the level to level. I now use it to set up stuff before milling ....just have to remember which way round to put it on.

Or check it against the surface of some water in a container.

set the level on a flat surface mark the bubles position , turn the level round 180 degree the position of the bubble should be the same as the 1st reading if it is acurate quite simple. if it ist adjust settings till they both read the same either way round . it doesnt have to be on a level surface to do this just a flat one

Exactly as Brightspark describes, I still have a heavy cast torpedo level from my turbine installation days, comes in a lovely wooden case and is accurate and has graduations marked to 0.0005"(half a thou)per foot length, and it was manufactured just up the road in York.Good old British engineering, before all these new fancy electronic inclinometer things.

I set the level against the garage wall and draw a pencil line then turn it round and do it again, works for me.

water levels

heres a set of water levels bought for a few quid from car bootsale its great when the seller doesnt know what they are for u get them for next to nothing .there more acurate than lazer levels over long distances and dont need calibrating . just a bit slow to use
