seriously though, if you're going to do the job i can be around your area in the next couple of weeks and for 40 or 50 uprights i'll happily pay you £2 each. it would be a shame to scrap it. i might even be interested in the timber for a rustic upper floor i'm planning if it doesn't get too damaged when you rip it out.

Dexion went bust a good while ago so as MK says it should be worth quite a bit.

You are quite correct, Dexion did go bust in 2003, but a new company started up, Dexion Comino Ltd, saved the old tools for slotted angle and pallet racking and continued manufacturing. This in turn was purchased by the Constructor Group and Dexion racking is now still sold all over Europe.

A dexion even exists in Australia, though this is a separate company

I showed a mate this racking,Wallace and he agreed that this stuff could make the bones of a Garden shed with the added bonus that the shelves could still be mounted internally,all the holes are already there for using T&G planking outside around the skeleton frame and you could even have a platform at ceiling height to store wood stock lengths.

I have a 6m x 3m concrete base laid out in preparation for another workshop and I had considered using the flooring and dexion to build it with. I think you would need to at least run the flooring through a thicknesser to reface it and turn it into shiplap then it would need treating. A lot of work but it would be a shed for life!

My da and myself saved some dexion shelving exactly like your photos a few years back.
We have kitted out our garage and my uncles shed and still have loads left.

One thing i noticed about your lot is the little corner braces. We never got any with our lot and always thought it was a design flaw. Obviously someone took them before we could get our hands on them. Not such a big deal on the amount in our garage but would have been nice to have them.

The corner plates are quite important to the structure as they tie it all together, there is a greater possibility of collapse without them.

For the amount we have its not important. We have each bay bolted together so that keeps it relatively solid.

Question for Wallace! What happened next with all this Dexion?

I'm a printer rather than a welder, and know that Dexion was created by a printer for his storage needs: I'm writing a short article on Dexion and I wonder whether I can use some of your pics to show an "extreme" use of Dexion?

I've been emboldened by seeing this construction, thanks Wallace.

Someone mentioned earlier on this thread about other ways of building with Dexion, and I'm looking for advice.

My son (5) has been asking about his own shed. I wonder now whether I could fashion a temporary shed from Dexion and MDF? I can build Dexion, but am looking for some advice on how to build something outside. I'm not sure whether Dexion is rust-proof? I'm thinking of something big enough to sit it (more of a den than a shed) -- perhaps washing machine sized? I'd be tempted to have a rectangle for the floor, covered in treated MDF; sides would be MDF sat inside the frame and screwed in. I could even have a clear plastic roof and cover the sides in felt.

Is this complete madness to try this? I know it would never be a permanent fixture and just need it to last 18 months or so.

Any advice on making a building from Dexion -- whether temporary or more permanent would be very welcome.

Not sure about the Dexion, I think it is painted mild steel but I wouldn't use MDF outside, even the moisture resistant stuff. I don't think it would last even 18 months even if you paint it. I would use OSB sheet to keep the cost down and paint this with a couple of coats of something. Or get hold of an old shed and reuse the timber. Quite often people trying to get rid of old ones.
