Paints in 2k.

Can someone clear this up for me, i know lacquer comes in 2k but i always thought the base coat also comes in 2k. I spoke to my local paint shop this morning and was told base coat is 1k.

After some research on here etc ive been told to use 2k on top of epoxy primer for the best rust prevention etc.

base coat is 1k as you dont need activator, anything needing activator is 2k although not all 2k products have isocyanates i.e some etch primers

Ive just spoken to another paint suppliers with a good rep and they sell 2k top coat. This paint business dont half have a lot of miss-information around.

yes all basecoats are single pack ..just the paint and reducer

find a good paintshop and buy from one place , they should know what works with each other

This going to be difficult to explain but i will have a go Once you understand its easy.

2K is paint & hardener & thinner 1K is paint & thinner

Clear over base is 1k basecoat with 2K clear over it.

2K straight paint or Topcoat as you refer to it is paint & hardener & thinner and has the colour in it.

COB is usually for mettalics, Metalflakes, Mica's & Pearls, all these are covered in lacquer. Having said that you can also have solid colour in a basecoat, this would be clear coated with Lacquer.

Yes best to use 2K on top of Epoxy, this could be 2K straight paint with colour in it or you could use Clear Over Base which would be 1K colour basecoat then 2K Lacquer on top. Got it

fiat is one company for example that uses a solid colour base coat as a standard paint system on certain models of their cars not sure all.

any good paint supplier will be able to tell you what the original paint system was

Just to let you know, i called them back and spoke to a more knowledgeable person. I was told the metallic paint i need only comes in acrylic 1k paint, the plain base coat black and silver i am going to use on top of the epoxy grey primer is 2k paint.

The paint shop in question is "Paint Shop Supplies" in Nottingham, after some research they do have a good rep. I had spoken to 2 of their advisers/sellers that were very good and helpful but only had one adviser that told me what i basically wanted to hear. This person that i had asked to change my original order had not done so when i called them yesterday, wish i had of got their name tbh.

All sorted out now though, thanks again for the help.

Not quite got it mate i'm afraid, the black & silver basecoat is a 1K product, No basecoats are 2K because they don't use a hardener.

These days its all COB because of the waterbase paint i believe

Well i ordered those in 2k paints and the activator for them, the words used may have been how he called them.

Just to let you know if you put activator in basecoat is doesn't dry and remains sticky, I know because i have a friend who tried it

Well i'll leave it to the painter's, the info from the paint shop said they are supplying 2k paint and activator for me.

I now have the paint and on the receipt it says >

M1000 LECHLER MACROFAN 2K MIX in black and silver.
