hi all, at work we have a customer that wants some "arty looking" signs making with weld on the top of some 2mm sheet they want some various decorations and outlines and stuff

would it work if we drew it on the cam programme and fixed the mig torch to where the head of the plasma attached, it usually uses an external hyperthern plasma

Sounds feasible.
Bear in mind that the sheet will buckle like hell if you do many long welds on it.
Give it a go and report back.

Depends how "integrated" the plasma is, the CNC may be looking for feedback from the Hypertherm (plasma detect?) which would need bypassing. Sounds an interesting project, but I'd use a Robot .
When I taught programming, the trainees would usually attempt to write their initials in weld once they'd got the hang of it!

Can't you just do it with your arc welder like you did on the dozer blade.
Oh hang on, the customer wants something that doesn't like you trod on a pigeon...
I'd agree with the fact that the plasma would want feed back, most machines like that do. Also your going to have to combine turning the welder on and off fairly precisely as the plasma starts and stops, especially if it has to double back on its self. You wouldn't be able to hold the trigger down as I guess you'd wobble it.

When we are cutting 150mm plate i have an attachment that holds a black marker pen and that marks where i need to drill through the sheet to save on pr heating time,thats on the Oxy /propane torch but could easily go on the plasma head and just set the machine to test run,couldn't you do this to draw the pattern then weld it by hand?
