Fly Tippers

Hi all,I have a problem with some toe rag leaving rubbish out side of my garage,trouble is my garage is some 60ft from the house and i cant keep an eye on it, i came home this evening after being away for the weekend and found an armchair dumped there ! I can only think of fitting up a security light plus a convincing dummy security camera but wondered if anyone's got any other idea's as a deterrent.

cheap italian made land mines? watched rougue traders the other week that was about fly tippers, dumping crap every where. if it happends often i would fit a real camera, and just keep passing the video to the relevant authorities. Im sure the fly tippers will soon get feed up with being fined

Thanks irondarren, I think the rubbish is coming from a house nearby
as there is a lot of coming and going from some of the rented properties around here but cant prove it of course, if i could they would get it back with interest !

Recently saw a program on WW2 decoys & deception so what about an inflatable pile rubbish outside your garage then you just let it down and roll it up when you want to get in?.
On a more serious note, a nice bright security light should help as they don't like to attract attention. You can get quite cheap security cameras now that will even switch a video recorder on which saves having to watch hours of tape later.

Don't expect too much from the law. If someone fly-tips on your land it's your responsibilty to deal with it legally.

Some carpet fitters dumped a cardboard roll (about 8' long) on a neighbours drive. The neighbour was away so I put it under the wiper arm of their van. They got the message OK. On another occasion someone dumped a cardboard box full of rubbish on his drive, the idiots left their name and address label on the box so that was duly returned to its rightful owner.

I used to have an industrial unit and i was the only one out of thirteen units to have a skip ( 10yard with a lid ) went in to work one Monday to find it half full of black bags full of rubbish ! I went through every bag until i found the address being Unit 1 ( the opposite end of the site ) so i delivered them back to him, bloody cheek !

I blame local councils for the massive rise in fly tipping.

Its so bloody hard to take a load of rubbish to a tip now
Especially if you've got a van.

In fact, its hard to put a bin bag full or rubbish out now.
Fines if you put it out before 6, fines if they find a piece of paper in it....

But the stupid thing with my local council..... they wont collect a fing cornflake box for recycling, yet they will happily collect a cap battery

Should try living in the country. Countryside seems to be the new skip. Loads of tyres, builders waste, fridges, wiring the gypos have stripped the copper from, and the old favourite - asbestos roofing. Loads of all those things on the farm and around. Used to be green and overgrown round here. Now it's landfill.

Seems the waste problem is being approached from the wrong angle. Bloody ridiculous to encourage a society to buy lots of useless crap then charge them loads when they try to throw it away. At the very least current policies aren't all that forward thinking.

It's all these green taxes designed to save the environment. The dumb clucks in the government haven't the common sense to grasp the implications. Even scrap metals are classed as waste so a business needs to buy a licence to transport them. This is a system "designed to stop fly tipping." Who on earth is going to tip scrap they could sell?

For private waste, Derby's pretty good. We've got a blue bin for plastic & glass, a bigger brown bin for garden waste, food scraps and cardboard (basically anything that'll rot down) and a black bin for the rest. They'll even give you a bigger black bin if you ask and they think you'll need it. You can also get free permits of you want to take a van to the tip, too.

Trouble is, it's difficult to know where stuff goes. Different councils have different systems. One of the councils on the south coast (Portsmouth or Southampton) has even told people not to put stuff in their wheely bins, because they haven't got the right equipment on the wagons, and the binmen are getting bad backs! If they all stuck to the same system, then they could make all the manufacturers of all the crap we buy put colour codes on stuff. But that's too intelligent, isn't it?

A local farmer rented out one his barns for storage. Little did he know what was occurring till 6 weeks later. The guy paid 6 weeks in advance to show goodwill. Then proceeded to be paid £1.00 a piece to take away the worn tyres from garages.

When the 4000 square-foot barn was full to the rafters he vacated sharpish leaving the farmer with the tab

In the part of Bristol i live we are given a brown bin for food waste which attracts flies and then we get maggots ( ok if your a fisherman) a black bin for cardboard and paper, and a wheelie bin for anything else except garden waste ( you have got to buy a green wheelie bin off the council for that) and no plastics you have got to dispose of that yourself dunno where tho !
its gone recycle crazy around here.As for the local council tip no vans,trucks,or trailers allowed.

Bins for food? Why would you want to throw away food?


Apparently they used to be quite strict at the local "tip", but when a mate was moving house a few months ago they didn't bat an eyelid at me going down there 3 times in the same week in my sign written van



You know what they say though, 1 mans rubbish is 1 mans treasure, I have been known to collect the odd piece of fly tipping in the past!

I only need my bin emptying every 2 or 3 weeks so I freeze food waste before putting it in the bin the night before collection. In Sheffield paper is collected seperately, everything else goes in the big bin and then to the incinerator, the heat is used to heat buildings in the city centre.

Lancashire county council are complete tossers, you can't go to the tip in a van or pickup or witrh a trailer with more than one axle with private rubbish unless you get a permit in advance from them, you are only allowed one permit a month. No trade waste at all is accepted. You're then expected to have sorted it into the relevant groups and have to lug it up steps to drop it in a skip, a right PITA and bloody hard work if you take a load of stuff. The so called Helpers are very choosy about who they help too. My bin is only emptied once every two weeks and we struggle like buggery to cope especially with 9 month old twins despite recycling all we can (and might I add we did this way before my local council extracted their digits from whichever orifice they were inserted in and brought in collections for recycling) You get fined if you put the wrong stuff in the wrong bin, if you put a bag out next to the bin and even if the lid on the bin isn't able to shut properly. All they collect are plastic (very choosy about which ones) cans, glass and paper (again very picky, no envelopes etc) Fly tipping is at an all time high and its not really surprising is it?

As to collecting fly tipping I've saved a few bits and bobs in the past myself including a half full 47kg Propane bottle, a wheeled trolley from a vintage stationary engine and a sack truck.

Our local tip here annoy the **** out of me. They sell any goodies they find but wont let you take anything away. I asked for the price of some of those huge whiskey bottles, thought I would have it to save coins in, as yer do. Got quoted 6 quid so I didnt have them. I locked the tip gates behind me on the way out with a padlock. Place was full too. Got me on CCTV doing it. Apparently the "hard man" tip goon/manager was after me. LOL. yawwwwwn.

The whole vans in tip things in england bugs the hell out of me, not everyone with a van has it for their business. I own a large van, but to carry bikes cos its my hobby (im a computer geek by trade...) When I was in suffolk last year I had to have a tidy up as I vacated the rentie house and as Id brought over the van of doom to take all my stuff home drove the tip in that, and the local tip refused me entry because I was in a "commercial vehicle". Er, its registered in france, with french number plates, is cosmetically in terrible condition with no sign writing at all. Do they think Im going to drive to suffolk to tip off a few bits of cardboard and wood? Stupid jobsworths. We ended up sticking it all out the back of one of the outbuildings as I'd cleaned the garage out to start with anyway. I resisted the temptation to go back at night and pile it up outside their bloody gates too.
Here, you just drive up and tip off, sorting it out into skips yourself. There is no distinction between commercial and domestic waste as long as you put it in the right skip. They even take tyres if theres a wheel rim inside still (steel).
There seems to be a lot less fly tipping takes place around here. Wonder why...

For the recycling nonsense, when I was in yorkshire a few years back, we had those green bins for cartons etc, but they never emptied them! Eventually a bunch of residents in our road had a pettition because they were never emptied, and the council responded finally saying the reason was the van could not fit down our narrow street, so therefore they would remove the bins completely! What felt wrong about it was the fact that the carton collection van was about half the size of the bin wagon that managed to fit down every fortnight...

My (nice shiny new) tip in France even has a cage for tyres, plus they'll take any chemicals. All the bins are below ground so ~I just back my trailer up and shove it all over the edge.
