Cooking oil as cutting fluid??

Really....i'm pondering about this for a while now...could it be done, use a vegetable oil as: sunflower oil, olive oil etc as cutting fluid? (especially drilling)
What would happen...would it smoke a lot...catch fire??

We are using some horrid stuff at work at the mo now...it smells bad, wherever you get spatters on your skin it itches, you will get red spots etc...

Really interested what you all think about this!!

Keep that stuff off your skin you don't want dermatitis use a good barrier cream

Olive oil has a smoke point of only about 190degC, so I'd use at least a good peanut oil, which is around 230degC.

As a flood coolant, even thats probably not a good idea. Ever had a pan catch fire in the kitchen? Now imagine gallons of oil going up.

edit: Yes John, i found something similar from our plant's provider (Fuchs)...now we are trying to talk them in to buying that stuff... not easy!
We're going to try and convince them with the fact that it's biodegradable....that'll make that cow from environment happy! (god i hope she doesn't read this haha!)

We were using a rapeseed oil based one for a bit, was good stuff.....from a cutting oil point of view.

The CT90 we have been using as of late isn't as good imo. Plumes of smoke from that.

Sparkey, If you have a decent ammount of veg oil,you would be better off putting it thro' a 5 micron filter and mixing it at around 20% with diesel for your motor,(thats assuming you have a diesel vehicle)

We used to use a Wurth cutting spray. It was bright red and looked just like frothy blood. Used to look like a masacre had happened on site when we had been drilling.
Used CT90 for a bit, as above, nasty smoke, although quite liked the smell.
Just use squeezy bottles with watered down Rocol cutting oil, buy it in 5L containers - lasts forever.

I agree about the CT90 Hitch, really fedup with it, seems to start smoking before you turn the drill on... I hate breathing that in.

Sparkey, could you not request something else on health and safety grounds, probably more likely to get their attention than biodegradability?

Yeah, that's what we are trying now at the mo Al, i've found one which is vegetable based and biodegradable...it's called plantocut from Fuchs.
Not for me really, but a friend/colleague who is working with it every day...

For the welders there isn't much hope coz the oil fumes we breathe in come from the oil they use on the presses...they use too much of that to switch to a more expensive one i guess...

Yeah good stuff, i'm happy with my Adflo too, once i got used to walking around with a hose and a box on my back...(and don't eat too much baked beans with onions!) lol i still bump into stuff with the thing...

I seem to remember some years ago certain press oils and cutting fluids being banned as when heated the fumes given off were carcinogenic,So be careful what you breathe.
