Good timing......water leak :(

Last night walked in to the kitchen to let the dog out before I went to bed and noticed a puddle on the kitchen floor....

It appears the storage tank for the hot water decided to spring a leak, great!, just what I need on christmas eve!

After a closer look I think the tank is way past it's best, infact most of the heating system in general is in need of an overhaul, replaced the pump and 2 way valve only last month, whilst at it took the opportunity to fit new valves to the rads (as a couple were weeping).

Stop cock for the hot water inlet also isn't sealing properly which is nice

Trying to stay optimistic, thankfully i'm confident with my plumbing just need to buy a new tank

Bad luck,screwfix has stainless steel cylinders about £120,10 year guantee,22mm compression fittings and will be a lot more efficient than old cylinder.remember to use rust inhibitor in the system when you fill up the boiler and rads again. Good luck

At least you caught it in time. I got home from work Xmas eve many years ago to my first house to find water pouring out above ground floor windows and a paddling pool when I opened the front door!. Cold water feed to header tank in loft had blown out of compression gland. Turned off water & electric then went to parents for Xmas

Things like this never happen when everybody [tradesmen-wise] is working and available to help at short notice. Most large firms operate an emergency callout system, or are you able to wait until you can DIY?

PLus you should get about 30 quid for the scrap tankIf your in a hard water area you may have to open it up and let all the lime sludgh out so they can weigh it .

Found a guy local to me selling them on ebay for £130

Just looked at plumbfix cat for sumer prices, £99 + vat for the stainless steel version.Now have looked at screw fix current price £199 with vat.Plumbfix is part of screwfix where your ment to get big discounts if you can show that you are gassafe,oftec or other.either way the stainless tank looks a better option,not fitted a cylinder since jan and that was copper.You nearly always find that the connections to pipes are in different places so mean you have to cut pipes and soulder new bits of pipe to make it connect

Having looked about nearly all of them have the cold water input in a different place to the existing one, either way i'm going to have to cut some of the pipe work to get it out as the cylinder is in a cupboard

Contacted the guy on ebay this morning and he's shut till 4th of jan so he's ruled out of the equation, the lack of hot water in the house is already setting the mood

Had another look this morning and found a stainless on screwfix for £156 (i'd been searching for copper cylinder )

Toolstation have stainless for £170

Plus the stainless one comes with 22mm fittings so you dont need to buy bsp to 22mm fittings.And i hope that when i come to change an immersion heater on one that is a few years old there will be less chance of busting the tank,as i should think the stainless tank will be stronger than a copper one.
As your going change some of the pipe on the feed to tank, i always try to make the draincock is as accessible as possible as i may have to come back another time. And for you it being your own house it makes sense

I think i'm going to have to run the cold water feed round the tank from the back (assuming the pictures are accurate) then i'll stick a drain cock within that pipe work towards the front, the existing drain is well corroded

I would have liked to fit a twin coil cylinder for future solar use but haven't got the extra cash at this time of year! Thankfully it's still doable with a normal tank...

HI the feed hole is always opposite the two holes for the central heating.i somtimes if there is not a lot of room to get your hand to the draincock bring a 15mm pipe from the feed junction to feed hole round to the front for easy use.draincocks nearly always seem to leak when being used so its helps to allow for room to place a small tray under the draincock when in use.

drain off valves are cheap and nasty just change it to a 15mm shut off valve with a short tail on it to conect direct to a hose pipe no leaks no dish

Brightspark your right driancocks are crap.seen it done and from now on will do it myself, also if one uses a full bore 1/4 turn valve there will be less chance of it blocking up

Tank now fitted, had to do a bit more mucking about than i'd have liked as the fittings on the new tank were in different places....

Cost me £210 in the end for the tank, pipe and fittings

Caught it just in time though, one of the fittings on the old tank snapped off in my hand when I lifted it out!

Now filled up with water just need to bleed the rads fire up the boiler and check for leaks Will be nice to have hot running water again!

nice job, we were without hot water earlier this year when the boiler died, had to wait to get it replaced and it didn't go down well with the wife or daughter . Talk about cold shoulder

I've got to admit the novelty of boiling the kettle 10 times just to wash up was wearing a little thin!

Rad's now bled and heating/water on, no leaks so far
