I see on msn tonight that SAAB (automobile) listed for insolvency this morning, how do other low volume (relatively) premium makers survive and other just fall by the wayside?

more than likely had its govement (Swedish) pull the plug on its regular cash injection..i do believe the same company has a very succesfull side on the militry aviation sector or at least did..

I have a mate who worked at Saab (for about 5 years) as a die maker/repair on re-new-able contract, apparently they used to swap die sets and press aircraft parts/panels on the car production line at times.

Looks like the defence company Saab AB is still going strong (although the defence industry isn't exactly booming in the current climate) - there is an announcement on their website today to point out....
'The car manufacturer Saab Automobile and the defence and security company Saab AB are since 2000 two separate companies with completely unrelated and independent ownership.'

i know a guy that paid 18 grand for a saab 3 years ago now he's gutted as its only worth 3 grand as he found out when he got rid of it maybe the main dealer knew this was coming when the valued it, needless to say he didnt buy another saab
Saab's problems began when they stopped making cars with the unique characteristic identity Saab became famous for, and just became re-shelled Vauxhalls that looked even worse than Vauxhalls and had more expensive spares !
They managed to last longer than other lame automotive ducks though, like Rover !

with the old Ford Taunus Engine ?Oddly enough when these Saabs were in the scrap yards the engines, also the 4 cyl Ford Essex engine, were sought after for transplants for that other iconic car, the RO80.

I remember seeing the saab's back in the 80's and it was routine to see 250,000 + miles on the clock and they were still going strong, i think things went downhill when ford took over. It said on the news today that ford wouldn't sell saab to the chinese as they didn't want their technology falling into chinese hands , just delaying the inevitable imho , we'll all be driving chinese cars in 10 years time.

Others are passionate about football im passionate about fords. Simple as really.

You can go off people rather quickly...
In all honesty iv had head gasket grief off a handful, a broken spring on 2 cars, brake pipe corrosion, and a diesel fuel pump go which was costly, oh and the dual mass fly wheel went in my fusion. Lucky it was under warrenty as it cost them £700 to fix at a ford main dealer!!!!!! and iv had a few boost hose's let go on my Rs's over time plus a fuel hose go on the fusion too which was down to a vaux
hall main dealer doing a deal for my dad on a service mot and not attaching the air box correctly causing the panel filter housing to rub its way through the fuel line, mastercrooks not master techs

No, variety is the spice of life! Iv also had too many motorbikes too. Thats what happens when you dont have kids nor a mortgage and far too much time on your hands
