7018 cheepy rods.

I was given a box of BOC everyday 7018's anyone used these and managed to get a decent weld from them? Iv used boxes of cheepy 5mm 6013's in the flat and the 3.2's for a non lo-hi root never had any issues, however the 7018's just seem crap any sugestions before I scrap the lot?

Atre you holding an arc..about a 3mm gap between the end of the rod and the plate

You can touch with 6013s but not with many 7018s

The BOC Everyday 7018s used to be european made but I believe they are now chinese.

Yes iv also tried running on 100volts on the old quasi,(the other sets only giving me 80v max) as I know a 70 series rods like a few more volts, They weld like a damp rod but the packs new and i redryed them just to be sure, I was runing some perfect christmas tree verticals tday with cheepy 6013s on my inverter I normaly use hobarts in a 70, Im just stumped why these are welding so dreadfull.

BTW when i started useing the BOC jobs they told me they were made by lincoln so guessing they could of been Italian, I used untold boxes of them at the time as I had a big structual job and never had a problem, the last year has seen a real decline in the quality so i think the source must of changed.

BOC 7018's bake in mothers oven at 250 degress centigrade for 1 hr, or until nice and crispy (and watch her go ape sh*t lol). I found the BOC 7018's tend to be damp strait from the box. ok if you give them a run in the oven and then use them out of a quiver, you can just about get away with it, but they are basically rubbish. Not as nice as the Esab one's was using them today to weld on some hinges to a gate post, nice rods, found they weld better as DC+ as opposed to DC-, today i was using them on the little petrol genset, and the hinge isnt coming off for no one. Snowcat if you can get on with them dumb them and pm weldequip he has just offered me a blinding deal on esab mildtrodes, for when i next need rods.

7018s on a gate hinge!! where were you jarasic park. Il give them a proper redry and give em another go tho im not holding my breath, there 450s as well which i dont like much in a 4.0, I think i might be going back to the hobarts soon.

Had the odd problem with gate hinges before where they snap the weld, normally when they get hit by dustcarts etc. So now i weld them on with 7018's just to make sure it gives the dustcart a good bending before breaking the hinges. (that will teach the dustmen to drive badly)

I have some off-brand 7018's that need to run hot or they seem to get porus welds. Work that way right out of the sealed package.

One of these days I'll get a new toaster oven and delegate the old one to drying rods and soldering PCB's.

The Hobarts seem to work no matter what you do

I thought that with the heat but when I was geting into the 200s and still no joy I decided it was'nt the way forward

Thats true, they used to be Lincoln made (in Barcelona) but BOC decided to go and buy cheaper. Im not certain but I believe they currently get them from China.
As I keep saying, you get what you pay for

Ok, a bit of a follow up on this, A visit to BOC's at the weekend had a winge about the poor quality rods, and:

A, Im certanly not the only one to winge about them,
B, They are chinese,
C, The manager of my local branch is no longer stocking them,
D, They are selling me there premium branded rods (made in europe) for the same money as there nasty cheep one's.

Also got a copy of there "the book" for free, its a bit of a sales catalogue, but there's some real usefull stuff in there as well, an anoraks dream read on gas... and some great stuff on rod propertys and uses. Usualy a tener but if you spend regular cash with em, your get it for nowt.
