I knew that Al, but was being lazy and inaccurate (I knew it cos it said it in the video, but I wasn't paying proper attention). But for clarity - if it was wire, it would have been drawn? - like in this Indian health and safety nightmare vid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax6uKaPnYIk

Thats crude wire drawing. the box contains a die that reduces the wire diameter as its pulled through.

MIG wire is basically the same but using a number of dies to gradually reduce the rod from 6.5mm down to 1.6,1.2,1.0, 0.8 or 0.6. Makes it a bit more complicated and the capstan has to spin faster after every reduction as the wire gets longer.

I like that video. I bet they were thinking, " Now we've made it we need a big staircase to try it out " (Slinky anybody) One of the places I worked at used to make different profiles and the metal was run through the rolling mill to shape round, flat or hexagonal then cold sized in the factory to customers requirements. The hexagonal was always the one to watch as it would curl round into a circle if you tried to do too much at once.

This looks bad but its actually an improvement on some of the 70s Cross Country Mills. Imagine if that bar /rod is 50 or 60 feet long and you have to catch it and push it into the next set of rolls before its all out of the previous set....get what I mean
