Thats crude wire drawing. the box contains a die that reduces the wire diameter as its pulled through.
MIG wire is basically the same but using a number of dies to gradually reduce the rod from 6.5mm down to 1.6,1.2,1.0, 0.8 or 0.6. Makes it a bit more complicated and the capstan has to spin faster after every reduction as the wire gets longer.
