got a grinding spark on the colored part of the eye about 3.30 saturday, so wwent in to hospital 9.00 and got seen by a doctor who picked it out but then said i got to go to the eye clinic to get the rust out.

is that the norm, because in the past when ive been, ive never needed a second apointment.

If that's what they say then that's what they want.
It depends if they get the splinter out before rust sets in, if so then that's it but in your case it sounds like it had already begun to rust so they'll need to make sure it's all clean.
Were you wearing decent goggles?

Yep, if there's a rust ring it has to be dug/scraped out. Don't leave it thinkig it will go away, coz it gets very bloody awfully painful, as I found out.

i was cutting the copper/steel/plastic, bit off the shaft of a 5.5 kva generator because i need the shaft for a project im starting, i had a gas mask on which ment not such a good fit with my safety glasses.

Glasses banned from our place now. Goggles only. 2 incidents last week with flecks of muck getting behind safety glasses. One resulted in a hospital trip.
When i went, i got away with the once only jobbie. Tears streaming down my face like a fool. Makes you remember next time.

I use safety goggles as opposed to specs, mainly because i've still had stuff in my eyes wearing safety specs, with googles they protect the eyes much more especially if your doing a lot of grinding etc.

They do tend to mist up but you can get some anti mist ones nowdays

i cant use them as they play havoc with my specs...i use a welding mask with clear glass and no misting up too plus it protects my big nose

If I wear those on a hot day I can't see squat after about 15 minutes, as my safety glasses steam up, I have tried the face mask route, probably the best option in all.

it happened to me they gave me dropps in eye and then used a dentists drill with a cutter on the end and cut it away it made me ill watching it they might have moved on with technology since then i dont know

You are lucky, I know of someone who lost their eye to a spark. I even like to wear goggles under a welding helmet, call it over the top, but you only get one pair of eyes!

I bought this one too, with the face shield, a few weeks ago after my rubbish glasses let some grit through. Had no trouble since.

I avoid these type completely, lost count of the times that the sparks made their way in, very hard to get a good fitting one which seals to my face, must have an odd shaped face, so the the sparks bounce of my nose and past where it goes over the bridge of my nose as there is always a gap there and then inside, even had some sparks go through the air vent holes

been there done it twice one visit 1st time 2 on the second not a very pleasent experience, the cause or the remedy.
i wont be going back
