WhAT TIG RODS,AMPS ETC FOR T45 ROLL CAGE .
I HEARD THAT IT NEEDED TO BE HEAT THREATED IS THIS TRUE?
ANY INFO FOR THIS CAGE WOULD BE GREAT THANKS

ER70 S2 ordinary mild steel rods. You don't say how thick your material is so no idea what amps or rod size and knock the caps lock it's rude to shout on forums

Treat it like Chrome Moly, use A15 rods, sorry can't help with amps as i use a pedal but don't get it too hot.

As said A15 is also known as er70s-2. Often with T45 (and 4130 chromoly) filler wire strength gets mentioned. Conversation usually goes something like er70 is an undermatch whereas an er80 type (a31 or a32) is closer. The counter argument to this is that for fillet welds on thin wall tubing weld size can compensate i.e. as long tiny little fillets are avoided an er70 type wire will be more than strong enough and less brittle

Yeah it's better to ask (even better to do a search first ), some of us just can't resist a bit of good natured ribbing when the same/similar questions keep getting asked that's all. It's not really any different to physically weld (weld pool behaviour etc) but it's not really a good choice of material for novices- it's expensive, harder to fabricate with and less forgiving than mild steel.

If you're serious about this sort of thing then the way to go about determining amperages etc is to knock up a bunch of coupons (test joints), weld 'em and dissect 'em. As said before amperage starting point will be in the 30-40A per mm range, exact numbers would depend on welding speed, arc length etc etc. There's a section on weld testing in the tutorial section at the top of the page

Whensparksfly - don't let it get to you. The best thing when asking for advice though is to give a bit more detail, so in this case it would have been what material you were going to make the roll cage from, just for starters.

Shox Dr was right though to suggest you question your level of ability (assuming it's you doing the job), as anyone with Tig experience should have an idea of what amps to use for a job, or at least, how to set the amps to be right (I never know what I need - I take a guess, use some scrap of the right thickness, and adjust to suit - or connect the pedal). Your original question simply flagged up the likelihood that you might be out of your depth and should perhaps be looking to get some more basic skills. We could be wrong though!

As for heat treatment - again, it depends on the material and how big an oven you have!

Since my reply has been questioned, and without wanting to repeat what the others have said, not withstanding the many times it has already been asked.

While my reply was direct to say the least. It was not without good reason.

Anyone wishing to build a safety cage, MUST have experience and knowledge of types of material to use, and the best method to build such. Your initial question suggests you know neither.

One of the first things you learn is; the rule of thumb 0.001" (0.0254mm) requires approx 1amp. So a 2.4mm walled tube as commonly used in rolled cages takes around 94amps. Personally I would be using around 75-90amp dependant on fit up and joint.

1.6mm Tungsten (colour is your choice)

1.2 to 1.6mm A15 rod

Actually, I see what you did there! Hmmm.

I guess lots of people want to start making roll-cages that's all. I just have concerns of whether it's a good place to start learning welding, presuming those asking the question have little/no experience so far.

As i said earlier T45 isn't the best material for a novice to start with, you can't weld it too hot same as Chrome Moly. There is a technical term for what happens to it but i can't remember at the moment

Much better to start with some CDS, bends nicely and you can MIG or TIG easily.
