Lost my Firefox cherry !!

Reached the point where I was utterly exasperated with MS IE, the crunch was I couldn't get it to work properly with youtube

So, after reading so many recommendations to use Firefox, I did !

Oh the joy !! Gone are all the glitches that were caused by the infernal IE, everything is now so fast, youtube works like a dream with the ridiculous lag that occured when selecting a new video to the constant "you need to upgrade your flash player" messages, all now consigned to the past !!

Why did I not make the change years ago ?!

All good now though, so I will join the ranks of the converted and add my strongest possible recommendation to theirs !!

I use Firefox but still need to go back to Explorer sometimes for sites which don't read properly in FF. They look like some writing is over the top of another page. The Kia Global Information site doesn't work in FF either and it has all the info for their cars on it.

I swapped from Avant to FF. Tried IE & Chrome and dumped them both after 5 mins.

Ditto with Chrome, it caused my laptop to become infected after years of no problems !!
Also, anything google reports all sorts back to them so they can exploit your data for £££££'s !!

You can use the IETAB2 addon to simulate IE. Works with everything I have tried. Never use the Mickeysoft offering now.

So... Does all this praise mean if you have FF and watch youtube you don't get the times when it hangs and waits to catch up? I am running Windows 7... does that matter>

That watching & waiting is more to do with your connection speed than the browser.

With YouTube I generally download rather than stream (install ANT toolbar), by the time I've selected the videos I want, the first has downloaded, and by the time I've watched that the others have too.

IE was ok with youtube on my old laptop running vista, the problem started with my new laptop running Win 7. Firefox can't make up for a slow BB connection but it's problem free on youtube now. Changing between video selections is much quicker than IE.

IE shows up on less than 19% of browsers on my web site. It is behind FF, Safari and Chrome. It had not been updated in 5 years and did not support most new standards. MS finally woke up and updated it.

I have been using Mozilla or FF since the late '90s.

I hope IE finally dies. Everything else works better. I know my web site has had special code to handle IE bugs and limitations.

Yup FF since launch

now you looked outside the M$ coral you'll see there is a lot of good stuff out there you dont have to pay ridiculous prices for or be locked into licence agreements or pay extra for "Proffesional Suite" or Anti virus that deletes your sys. files etc etc

FF + Ubuntu too but dont like the way its going so "Mint" beckons or any amount of linux distros

i never get that far and give up 3 mins in to the bootup

Ubuntu boots in about 20 seconds so you can boot check the mail and switch off before youve even put your password into the Ms machine here

stable too laptop stays on for weeks without having to re boot

This Ubuntu, how much is involved to convert from Win 7 ? My main concern would be importing files. Would it be able to read all the stuff on my external HD ? I no longer keep anything of importance on the laptops HD.

I would imagine it would be fine. I have my PC as a dual boot (ie I can use either) with Ubuntu and Windoze XP. When in Ubuntu I can browse the Windoze partition with no problems. TBH if you want more tech questions answered you'd be best off going to the Ubuntu forums.

Oh BTW, you can try the OS from a CD (ie you don't need to install it). It runs a bit slower like this, but you can test it for your needs, and try reading your files.

I rarely boot Windoze these days.

So, I have XP running google chrome. I've never had a problem with it, although I liked the old google better. Boots up fairly fast too. I've never had firefox. Why would it be so much better?

Gnu/Linux can be a huge leap for some people. Half the battle when I started, was trying to re-learn things "the right way" & unlearn "the windows' way". It's a real education in itself and one that puts many people off.

Fortunately Linux has moved on a lot since those days. Ubuntu's a good choice, "Linux Mint" is a better one imo.

Linux acquired native support for read / write NTFS (Windows) some years ago, so if your external hard drives are formatted as such (or, ext*, FAT, etc), it will be fine).
