how much do you think I should be charging to make these?

50x5 "feet"
hammerite (or similar) finish

labour only... mats I can manage

appreciate it is a how long is a piece of string question.... so to help:-
not commercial, so just need to do it for a reasonable amount... after all we all only have so much time before we shuffle of this mortal coil. At the same time I dont want to do it for nothing, so what sounds reasonable?

about a hours work ? suppose 50-60 if its your own elctricity and gas and crap

A quick estimate.
Cutting, welding, clean up and paint 2 coats.
Consumables: Gas electric wire etc £10
Labour £70 to £100 depending who it was.
So price would be between £80 to £110 + material + paint.

If you're calculating it by time, it depends on what machines you have to hand (and therefore how long it takes), as well as how much they cost to run.

Time yourself doing one from stock coming in the door to the completed one leaving with the paint dry. Figure out a day rate (plus consumables, electric etc etc), multiply the two numbers. ADD PROFIT. How did you buy the machines without profit??? One is your wage, the other is business profit to invest etc.

Al-- work paid for the machines a while ago...as you say from profit, they are now mine so only w&t and consumables... for a little thing like this thats really only gas & wire, a 4.5" disk..... bandsaw & mig... might just use arc tho as I now have one

Just realised how times have changed as I typed the above.... 10-15 years ago you had arc & were a flash git if you had mig, let alone tig...

I was thinking £60-70 so not far off... mates rates...ish as it is not strictly my line of work, but as thay say, any port in a storm

I find I used to work for 3 rates:

A True Mate, usually nothing at all and sometimes even use my own stock, although a true mate usually throws a drink my way but I would not mind if he didn't because a true mate is there when i need him.

A mate who is a mate when they need something: I make sure I get something out of it but the cost is favourable to them and cheaper than elsewhere.

Everyone else:. My views on this changed when I retired, no longer seeking the work so if they want to use my skill and very valued free time then I want them to pay well for it and I should finish the work thinking..'that was a nice little earner' When I was doing a fair bit I occasionaly put in a really high estimate, thinking if I get it great..if not I don't care, was amazed how often I got the job.

Why do two jobs for £100 each when you can do one for £200 and yes I understand when you are depending on the work to survive that philosophy does not really work and you have to compete with the prices.

i dont think i could do a quote

weld it together

remove spatter and if neessary tidy welds within a hour

if its not for a mate thats the way you have to look at it really but if it is then obviousely 10 mins on the phone ordering etc can be forgotten about

where i work the boss probably spends half the time in the office quoting ordering send bills out etc

on some small jobs the labour for making it is less than half the total cost

I would allow for 6 hours labour for one man for a job like that. Get the material, work out your cuts, cut it, clean ends, lay out, tack, weld, clean up, paint etc. The other few hours left in the day would end up with someone dragging their heels becasue they don't want to start another job before the end of the day, so i'd be tempted to put a full day to it.

A fabricator is on around 12 quid an hour so it would cost me 70-odd quid in labour to fab up on 6 hours or 120 quid for a full shift.

I'd be quoting around £390 all in labour and materials, ex works, to do something like that. Maybe more as its one of those jobs i wouldnt really be too bothered about
