Weld Symbols - BS EN 22553

Hi guys,

I'm trying to look up the supplementary weld symbols for BS EN 22553 but I can't seem to find all of them. I've tried roymech and a few other websites via google. If anybody out there can help it'd be greatly appreciated.

To have them all you really need to buy the BS spec. Its not cheap.

Copying is actaully illegal (copyright) and BSI are quite strong on it. Its their source of income.

They may turn a blind eye to someone publishing parts but not the whole.

I might be having a thick moment here Al but, are they not designed to be a standard? So they can be copied

bsi are very very strict on copying standards when i worked at the collage we had a licence to allow "part" copying (5 pages i think) of standards for use in teaching and the licence cost £1000+ a year!

No you should buy originals

In a QA system they will only accept originals that are subjected to issue control....photocopies can be tampered with and you may be copying an old issue.

I was told that something like 80% of BSIs income is derived from welding related standards. If thats true they will be very protective over "free" copies I would suspect.

Are they not used as part of a job/design description. Is there a World wide std set of icons, to inform the welder how to carry out the procedure?

As far as Im aware there are two sets of symbols European and American....there may well be far eastern as well but Ive never seen any.

If your business uses them you should have an original copy that is automatically updated.

I believe a copy costs £170 so I suspect the OP is trying to save a few quid

We have online access to BSI and can view/print all the BS's etc. It aint cheap.
I've just looked at all the weld symbols/hieroglyphics. I've seen the wall charts in loads of places, maybe not all the symbols, but most of them. They must be readily available. How can you copyright something like that?
There must be simpler ways of comunicating weld requirements.

You would think so wouldn't you, can you imagine the colour codes for capacitors was the same. Or the symbols for a technical drawing was copyrighted. crazy

I used to be involved in writing BS Standards. There is a lot of work involved and consequently a lot of cost. They need to recoup the costs. Now they are all BS EN specs the committees are bigger and consist of people from all over Europe so the costs (and the income) have increased.
I can see your point but for £170 you can get the lot. The charge usually includes automatic updates until the spec is replaced so its not a fortune.

The AWS ones seam to be freely available, The AWS maybe thinks they should be standard to use.....

Also on Autocad 2010 theres a complete palate available for use, how does that work, if you plot a drawing using BS symbols are you in breach of copyright?

I have a stencil here with most if not all the weld symbols on. Judging by the amount of ink on it there has been some serious breaching of copyright

Its the document that is subject to copyright law not the use of the symbols. Obvioulsy the symbols are designed to be used.
As far as Im aware AWS specs are subject to the same copyright laws.
