Just a few things that i do, mostly common sense but hopefully it can help put you at ease, once a full understanding is gained there is no need to be nervous when handling cylinders no matter what the pressure:
I always close the cylinder valve when not in use, gives an extra line of defence against losing your precious gas.
personally, i leave the regulator set up with correct flow and just use the cylinder valve for isolating or vice versa turning on.
cylinders are very robust and are strength tested (TP or test pressure) to a pressure far higher than there MAWP (maximum allowable working pressure).
Dont overtighten cylinder valves when closing them, this can overtime damage the valve seats.
Always ensure regulator threads are in good condition when removing or replacing a regulator, checking for signs of cross threading or damage.
Depending on what gas your cylinder is check you know the correct hand of thread i.e left or right handed.
i like to check all fittings occasionally for condition, takes 5 mins and is worth doing when dealing with high pressures.
I fully agree that cylinders should ALWAYS be secured so they cannot topple over.

I think my aprehension stems from a minor issue last week. I turned the cylinder on and the pipe to the welder burst. It freaked me out, but I think it was down to the pipe being damaged.
A new reg with flow rate that I ordered will also ensure I am regulating the flow rate of the gas correctly.

I find closing the valve, when not in use, stops that
I reckon there's more chance of a valve leaking than a cylinder randomly exploding.
Valve + regulator + flowmeter = 3 x less chance of losing a hundred quid's worth of pure argon overnight.

More like 3 places it can leak from. If the bottle leaked from the valve there wouldn't be any gas in it when you bought it
When you open a new bottle, inspect the mating surface and threads, on both the bottle and Gauge. Slowly VERY SLOWLY open the valve a little to blow any crapment out. Close valve and fit gauge. Check for leaks.
