Welding Cast with MIG

Hi Al
I have a quick question?? My son cracked a water jacket on his boat motor, this is just a really small crack, was wondering if anybody has ever use a flux core on cast before? Crack is so narrow that just a little steam comes out of it, and I am thinking if I hit it rear fast with the flux core mig that I can seal this but just one little spot at a time then grind it down and see if it will solve his problem!!

Hello Juice,

in the U.K., there is a product called Wonderweld, a chemical sealer. I used it on an old tractor engine with a badly cracked block, (top and bottom between where the cylinder liners fit, i.e 6 cracks total) more in the 'Ive little to lose trying it'.
Much to my surprise it worked and the tractor has been runnning for two months now and no water in the oil any more.

I'm sure you have a similar product over there, worth a go, especially as cracks tend to keep on cracking?

If you mean cast iron, why not use Stick.

The best filler is pure Nickel, a spool will cost a fortune, a stick will be next to nothing

Many moons ago, I used to work with a time-served Rolls Royce mechanic. He told me that cracked cast hydraulic slave cylinders could be "fixed", by soaking the cracked part, in ammonia, overnight. His exact words were; "drop it in a bucket of p1$$"...

Thank you very much for your reply! Wonderweld I'll look for it, I also read about a product called Marine tech, and I'll also look for that! My sons boat is 30 years old and he loves to fish for salmon here on lake Michigan, and I have to fix it for him one way or another!!! If he wasn't a good kid I wouldn't even consider it and tell him he is on his own, I have two other sons that also enjoy the boat when it's running, no were to be found when DAD is working on it! Just kidding their great to, but they drink all my beer

I also thought about that, I have a mig welder but that would give me a reason to get a engine driven welder to take to the boat!!! Wait a minute read about a welder last night that will weld and cut anything from broken hearts to ( Y ) holes, think it's called a multipluz or something like that it's portable and cuts as well (sounds like BS to me) but welding has changed a lot in the last 30 years since I was employed as a welder, whats a plasma cutter real men use air gougers

I tried the sil bronze with my mig but it didn't do so good. But maybe it was because i was using .023 wire and had it been thicker it might have worked better...Bob
