whats this tool ? clamp

got 2 of these , eclipse branded , seem to be made from decent steel

any idea what they are used for, its called a toolmaker clamp according to google but i cant how its used really

toolmakers clamp, useful for milling etc,had to make one as an apprentice ,many years ago......:laughing

we used them for clamping smaller parts together,which could then be held in a machine vice ,not the easiest clamp to set ,but does provide a powerful and parallel,clamping force...

HA Ha Shox, you are right we all do still have them and some of us still use them and very frequently. Brilliant clamps and underused as many find them tricky to use. I am Toolmaker by trade so for me they are first choice. You should all dig yours out of your tool boxes and have a fiddle with them, see how useful they are.

This is a pair being used to hold a plastic lining block underneath the top steel plate, so it can all be drilled in one hit, saving the time drilling the plastic separately.

Ha,ha,yeah me too and I've still got me block vice that near shattered me big toe.

I never did metalwork so missed out;-(
They look really usefull, a whole lot better than sandwiching
things between a few old bits of flatstock or using mole wrenches...

Yep ! A toolmakers clamp. I had to make one too as part of my machine shop training many years back too !
I don't think the current from a mig or a stick welder would do it a lot of good.
