My Hammer handle

Hello,

Here is a pic of my makeshift hammer handle that seems to be more sturdy than the original, it's made up of a peice tube, a bolt and offcut of threaded bar.
I noticed that at the join of the bolt and threaded bar after welding there is a yellow powder substance around the welded area. Does anybody know why this is?

It's either opium or the bar had a coating similar to galvo, probably not the best of fumes to breath in either.

I may need to invest in a mask of somekind.

Zinc or Galvo coatings unless well removed with a grinder can affect the strength of the weld, affect the chances of seeing the weld pool and leave a dirty rough weld and as mentioned should not be breathed in...nasty stuff.

The best alternative to a mask is not to use it at all if you can prevent it.

What are you using that hammer for drawing pins?
That threaded bar will bend if used for anything heavy,no decent grip either.

It was a zinc passivated threaded bar or bolt, unless you had your nose glued to the bar while you welded it and took extra deep breaths you will be fine.

I may need to invest in a mask of somekind.

And a crash helmet for when you use the hammer

Would be much better off with a hickory wood handle!

If it dont break, it will really hury your hand, i hate holding threaded bar. It will also try and spin round all the time.

lol there ok i got both. the anti vibe are a little heavier on the handle but thats personal choice
