Antique finish

Garden metalwork....

I need to look into creating an antique rusty white finish.....on new metalwork.
I did consider just putting a light coat of white primer on, and leave it at that....?

Any ideas?

It looks exactly like a patio table I painted in white water based gloss, the advert stated, no primer etc etc, like a sucker I fell for that garbage...so I gave the table a first thin coat, it rained during the night and hey presto, next day 'antique finish'

What about mixing iron filings in with (water-based) house-hold emulsion & applying it...

As a finish; have you tried these decking oil's, Hitch?

They're really nice! Soaks into the rust and seals it, dries well, easy clean-up's and re-coats. Even the B&Q version (spit...) works well.

Yeah, ive used oils and waxes before. I like the burnished and waxed look a lot .

Think i might have a go on a bit of scrap, ive got some old emulsion kicking about, and some water based satin, only thing i havnt got is any rain...... but i doubt it will be long till i can get some.

Don't the household emulsions contain some sort of acid to neutralise the alkali in wall plasters (...or something like that)? Maybe there's a super acidic version that would help accelerate the process...
