Welding magnets

Hello,

Im thinking of purchasing some welding magnets.
What i'd like to know is whats the difference between the blue and the red except the colour?
Do the magnets loose there power once heated up a few times?
Is it advisable to place the earth clamp onto magnets to weld workpeice being held?

Hello Mike,

generally magnets lose strength if heated, but using magnets to position or hold bits you would just tack them, remove the magnets and fully weld, so shouldn't heat them up.
Personally I wouldn't put the earth clamp on the magnet, far better to have it on the workpiece.

As far as I know,the mags are just a temporary tool to get a tack weld at key points and then taken away for the continuation of the weld.

The mag is not a rigid point to adapt the earth clamp to so best avoid clamping to it.

That's what i'll do then, just use them to tack the workpeice.

i have a couple and if i was to get some more i would get the ones that can be turned off as they attract grinding dust very fast and become difficult to clean

keep them in a freezer bag then when they've collected loads of swarf and grind dust turn the bag inside out and bin it.

or if you have some old radio speakers you have free magnets when you strip the speakers keep them in a bag

Good for swarf collection and maybe holding pieces together horizontally but I think Mike is talking about the ones for holding parts at set angles.

he means the ones that hold bits at 90%of 45% those ones i have some that turn on and off the red ones supposed to be 75lbs i don't think
i suggested speaker magnets because they are free if you have some old speakers

Obviously you take them out of the bag when your welding. I just credited the members of this forum with enough intelligence not to leave them in the bag near anything hot.
