what not to do at home . i just took these out of a shower pull switch on a callout the cables were burnt and short so the guy extended them with conectors and tape even after the bodged extension the new wires burnt out . i dont know why the elastic band was fitted good job it was on an rcd . would u risk your family for a few quid . get electrocuted and maybee burn the house down

That is nothing to what i have seen when working with my father. I have seen a cooker circuit with all three cores bare with soldered joints in behind a stud wall i took down it was a shock to see such dangerous bodging. i then turned the main switch off before calling a spark out. we then spoke to the home owner who said it was safe hethen admitted it wasnt after showing him a few photos about house fire by dangerouse electrics. he admitted to bodging more joints up it ended up that he paided for the house to be gutted and rewired SAFELY this time and the internals rebuilding it was a good payday when my dad finshed that job he was the builder not the spark

In my house the previous owner, a fireman, wired a 2-way switch circuit using twin & earth, with the earth conductor to carry one of the live feeds between the switches.

When I repaired home computers I reckoned 90% of the mains plugs were wired incorrectly, from poor cable clamps to earth & neutral transposed. I always checked them whether asked to or not. The most common fault was 13A fuses on Sinclair Spectrums.

May I say you also have some electricians who bodge jobs as well,I'm no qualified electrician but I can re-wire a house up.
My BIL used to have an electrical buisness in house re-wiring and 3 phase plant work,buisness took off well and he had to hire 2 more electricians,one of em didn't last long as I informed the BIL that he was bodging jobs by jointing wires under the floorboards with inappropriate connectors ie he wasn't using the proper junction boxes.

We had one that fitted two switches back to back on each side of a wall, one in the dining room and the other in the hall, with a short length of wire between them.

Nothing wrong with that except a sliding door retracted into the wall betwen the switches - or it did until it hit the wire connecting the switches!

a 2 week course and u suddenly become a part p electrician then they buy a van and get let loose on the unsuspecting public .who get a little certificate to say the work like this complies not it takes a minimum of at least a year under supervision before id let any trainee i have loose on his own as im responsible for his actions. heres a part p job what the eye doesnt see

Slightly off topic

This bungalow I'm in,apparently the new regs state you have to have an emergency electrical cut-off valve for the mains water supply....well

This has one fitted but I posed the question to the surveyor on noticing a problem with the old tap valve....the plumber had plumbed in the sink waste pipe inside behind the units and he also managed to fit the pipe right behind the stopcock valve which meant you could not turn off the valve in an emergency.

According to the surveyor there is little need to use this stopcock as the electrical switch off will isolate the water....great I said but what if the electrics are off for some reason? and I get a burst pipe during the electrics going down....blank face on the surveyor.

In industry an emergency shut-off valve would "fail safe", power holds it open so a power cut/failure would shut the valve.

Probably the most important one we have is the town gas shut-off valve, closes when the fire alarm goes off!
