M4A1 Sherman project

Just joined the forum this week and here is the Sherman I mentioned in my first post.

There's a couple of small holes to fill and then its all good

Couple of reasons, quantity over quality, you can only shoot so many Shermans, T34's and Centurians before they gang up on you with greater numbers and put the boot in !
Supply line vunerability, supplies could not keep up with with the speed of advance, no fuel no go !!
Poor field reliability and repairability, and no proper means to recover those out of action.
Too complex to produce in adequate numbers fast enough.

King tigers were expensive to manufacture. you could make several shermans for the same price and the t-34 was about 10:1 cost wise.

True, but I would have run away as soon as I saw a king Tiger.
Luckily the Germans also fannied about making Kettenkrads instead of tanks.

I went to Bovington Tank museum a couple of years back with Junior. Twice in two days, he loved it, I humoured him (hard work being Dad). We agreed he could have the King Tiger, and I would have to make do with the Jagdpanther. We would start on his school, then my exemployer, after that we would see how far we got.

Some of us did run away at the sight of a Tiger, it was called Tiger panic, but the Russians didn't, well they couldn't, or Stalin would have them tortured and shot !

Ultimately it was Hitler that scuppered the Tiger series, he insisted that they were bought to production before they could be properly developed, no one had the guts to oppose him and insist that they had the necessary development.
They should have had a purpose designed diesel engine, more appropriate road wheels and suspension and a stronger transmission.
Thank goodness he did screw up, things could have been totally different.

They are still mighty impressive machines though, regardless.

Agreed, Stalin ran things on the total fear concept and it worked in the context of defeating a potentially superior enemy.

Unfortunately (or fortunately ) its not mine, I'm helping the owner restore it. Its one of the two that were in the telly series, on Discovery I think, that were being done by the Tank museum on the Isle of Wight.
The front and the back are from two different range wrecks, this is the two worst halves and they were only roughly placed together and tack welded

All the holes will filled but the scars'll be left as they are.
Mammoth task, it just sucks hours of labour up like a black hole swallows light!

seem to remember that they was all up in arms about the isle of white lot repairing them with mig rather than ark welding

also a bit about the yanks and tigers the pacific T26 transporter crews was told to leave any germans and only pick up any tigers as said they abandened them no fuel no supplies ammo spares etc
one year i might make the war and peace show

Would love a tank but have to be content with a Matchless WD G3L motorcycle !
Even a Willys Jeep is out of my price range now !
