if its not a duel voltage motor then a VFD will be no use. on the data plate it will say 220V (ish) if it is duel voltage. if not then a rotory converter/ change motor is your only options. its only a 750W 1HP motor

change the motor for a single phase one, or if you wish to retain the three phase unit, and it's not dual voltage Drives Direct sell 415v single to three phase static converters. Personally I wouldn't go for a rotary convertor.

advantage of a rotory is you can then use it to power other 3ph machinary as you add to the workshop
Rotary converters are far more reliable and last longer than statics............there is an awful lot of information out there about using single phase to power 3 phase machines, and the majority of is designed to sell what ever is on offer.

a single ph will not give the same power as a 3ph and 3ph are smother weather you wold notice drilling is another issuess
Ummmmmmmmmmm isn't that bad info? .75kw motor 1 hp. One horse is one horse no matter if three or single phase.

a 3ph motor will run better than a 1ph motor. a 1ph 0.75kw will start loseing speed much quicker than a 3ph 0.75kw motor

rotary convertors are not particularly good as they give a rough three phase output and consume power when the machines that it powers are not being used. Yes it can be switched off, but that's a bit tedious if it occurs frequently.
Cost apart, static convertors offer far more flexibility and inbuilt motor protection, soft start, variable frequency etc.
In this instance, fitting a single phase motor is probably the most effective.

Think you are getting crude static converters confused with VFD's.............For serious workshop use where there is no 3 phase power, and several machines such as lathes, mills, drills (which all use simple 3 phase motors), are being considered, an old rotary converter still takes a lot of beating, and is something that can be made at home by anyone not wanting to pay for commercially made units.
Depending on the price paid for the motor, its quite possible to build a usefully sized rotary for less than £200, and there are plenty of free plans available to provide an idea of whats required.

3 phase motors run smoother than a single phase motor but u wouldnt notice the diffrence on a pillar drill lathe or a milling machine . wether its 3 phase or single the hp will still be the same. the machine would have to be mighty critical to need to be 3 phase
Well ye my thoughts exactly. I work with them all day single and 3 and hmmmm. i do accept in theory three is smoother of course but nothing that will ever effect the layman's uses in home or industry tools.
I run two pillar drills for production identical meddings one is 3 ph the other single not an ounce difference in the actual output and being the same horse motor. I can accept what madkayaker says if he is referring to cheap junk motors you typically get on cheap machinery these days like pillar drills which have no guts despite being x hp. Those things being termed as Electric motors is rather debatable.
Its sort of saying this car has 100 horse and that one has 100 horse but this one is more powerful.

nearly all motors are made in china for a budget price on home workshop machines .they are a bit ropey on ballance and giving vibration . all my machines have either brook crompton motors or g.e.c or simlar fitted apart from a couple of compressors which dont realy matter .a good quality resiliently mounted motor overcomes any vibration problems along with any belt driven machine

the only 1ph piller drills have been Chinese junk (i include a £500 draper expert in the statement) where as 3ph stuff has been old quality stuff so its probity the poor motors that are to fault
Yes indeed, and if you manage to get your hands on good old quality English single phase you will find they are totally fine and totally compare with 3 phase.
Its a bit rare with even the so called expert style ranges with modern tools that they can be seen as good or do as they say on the tin. Its all cheap junk unless you pay the right money.

And the right money is probably a lot more than an old drill; apart from things like Fobco 12/8s which I have seen with price tags of 1200 quid on.
I have always stuck single phase motors on drills, the motors are the sort of size it's not hard to come by. All the drills I have had came with three phase motors.
If you wanted to use an inverter there are plenty of secondhand inverters around, I bought a pair for £11! small 3phase input inverters are often dirt cheap, you can run some/most of them from single phase. Yaskawa and Hitachi inverter PDF's often have[well some have] a section suggesting the de-rating needed.
