Its also well worth remembering that its very easy to take action in the small claims court, and while small claim isnt relevant in this case, in the face of court action for small sums there is a good chance a big company will simply pay up.

Not really when they can obtain one of these illegally,how many times have you shopped and never seen where the pin machine is hooked to?

Fair enough...

If it had of cost me an hour or more I may have considered, based on this, charging at my rates for time lost, etc

I'm still not too sure at taking on a bank though, I wouldn't bother with an account if I didn't have to for the sake of mortgage payments, etc...

All you need to do is to tell them in writing that if you have to write to them again, your charges are £35 per letter plus £60 per hour pro-rata for the time spent compiling data. You then submit an invoice if you do write to them again due to their inefficiency.

I am about to take on HBOS who seem to think that they can move the goalposts and then fine me £20 a month at will. They have largely ignored me so far, so it is time to up the ante a bit!

Good on you aj...............lots of people seem squeamish about taking on banks, phone companies etc etc!

I have always found its a very good idea to side step the bottom feeders on the phones, and write directly to the MD or CEO.

Also well worth mentioning legal action of some sort in your opening letter, and having tried this some years ago in relation to BT, I was rewarded with a cheque for £300 not long afterwards!

We move accounts to Barclays after being done for 4 x £ 50 to an on-line betting casino when banking with the Halifax

It was refunded and out account was stopped PDQ by them but we realized the vuneralibility of it all keeping a fair sum of money in a bank account for anyone to access.

We changed the cash going out account to a Barclays one where they sent us a gismo that is pre -configured with their main frames and generates a new 4 figure pin number / handshake number set each time we log on to use it.

The out going account only has a hundred or so on it and is stopped if it is reached . If there is a likely hood of needing more we just transfer in it over the internet this includes Pay-pal as well .

Now most of our payments are now done by direct transfer from the more secure Barclays account or are done in cash .

Have you tested that? I ask because I set up a credit card with a limit purely for online shopping, it got "cloned" and they managed to almost double the credit limit before being stopped, the card company wanted to charge me for unauthorised exceeding credit limit!
It did have a happy ending when they removed all the cloned purchases and charges.

I later had a laugh at the fact it got cloned when renewing macaf** internet security

And here was me considering the "Halifax reward" account...
£5 per month doesn't seem much of a benefit but it adds up and severely cuts the costs for things for my hobby

I've recently had an "unauthorised transaction" on my Barclaycard Visa for 499 pounds that took them several call and emails from me to sort out.
Funny thing was, this scam took place almost immediately after I'd been on the phone to their call centre in a certain Asian country on another matter. The call centre employee asked me twice whether I wanted to do any balance transfers, which I didn't.
I think 500 pounds would have triggered a phone call to me to check the validity of the transaction.
Call me suspicious, but I can't help thinking there was a connection there.

About two weeks ago I got an automated phone call from them asking me to authorise payments I'd made that didn't even total £30
Daft thing was all the details of the payments were within two to three days before and I remembered making them all, no brainer...

I think I'll be writing in due course, albeit after I decide to transfer my banking elsewhere...
