As for surface condition (LR Axle) I don't think it matters to the gun. It will however show in the finished product

true but i would be using matt black any way would take a while to do my new chassis i bet

I wouldn't powdercoat axles axle parts or chassis, even if it were free. The reason been if the coating gets damaged water soon finds it way in lifting the coating. When I re-chassised my 90, I painted it with Micaceous Iron Oxide, and then 4/5 coats of Stone clip it's half the price it used to be (30per gal) it will last for yrs and can be repaired if needed

If anyone sees another reasonable priced setup other than Electrostatic Magic please post some links here please,this is the only diy priced kit i've seen so far....I had always thought it to be too expensive to diy ,seems to be a huge leap from electrostatic magics kit and pro gear ,surely there are some "better quality" or mid priced units out there as well?...

I followed a link to harbor freight last night ,I see a lot of the prices convert $1 =£1.........Shox i see electrostatic magic suggests leaving a corner or part bare for connection ,hadn't realised about the adjustable voltage ,although that may be overkill for my needs .....interesting reading none the less..

I've had the Electrostatic Magic kit since '95/6, used it to refurb several parts on my Esprit. I found that you had to really throw a lot of powder at the part to get a decent thickness of coating or else it'd show up every slight defect in the surface, just like paint.
You also need a nice controlled area to catch the 'overspray', it's very fine so gets blown around/carried on clothes and shoes to create a hell of a mess if you aren't careful...

I think it is a fantastic idea to be able to do your own powdercoating 'inhouse'
But, for the total outlay of approx. £200 for the gear and a cheap oven etc
I think you could get an awful lot of parts powdercoated for £200

Yes, but you could turn it into a sideline to earn a few quid.

Pair of bike wheels 50-60quid+
yokes 25
lower stanchions 30
Sidestand 15
engine cases, £££

It soon adds up, and that's not to mention the petrol to and from Powder coaters

Looks even easier seeing the Fast Ford article...although not totally convinced about the budget curing process they followed !

A tip I've thought about:
When earthing, if you have any threads on th epiece, just screw in a bolt and clip to that - saves having to plug/mask up the thread, and should earth just aswell.

I thought that and I have done a few small jobs, but I'd suggest buying it for yourself to avoid disappointment. If I'd had it when I started rebuilding the kit car I'd have easily saved it's value in rattle cans.

Hi all,
I am veyr very new here and this is my first post.
I am into sandblasting and polishing.
I would like to have a go at powder coating and have looked around carswell etc etc. I have yet to find a powder coating supplier in the UK that matches the type of company they have in the states like pc365 or eastwood.
I appreciate that I need to buy a gun,hopper and oven and came across electrostaticmagic thinking they might be a good place to start.
There are a few people on the net that seem to have built PC guns from sandblasting equipment but I have yet to see if they are any good.
If anyone has any pointers about hobby PCing and where a decent gun can be bought in the UK that is worth while I wou;d love to hear from them.

I think there just might be some financial gain to be made from a small DIY kit that will at least allow me to get my money back on any purchase.

Welcome to the forum Tony ,i've had to put this on the back burner so to speak ,but can see myself going down this route at some stage,I work just outside Bath so not far from you,perhaps you should visit a pro outfit and have a chat ,Advanced Metal treatment is in Westbury,Wilts, I worked for a company that used to deal with them ,they do car wheels ,frames ,as well as production components and one off's as we supplied...they do have a big oven...lol...good luck with your search ..Gav

I spent sometime just like yourself and others looking for suitable kit over here, the Companies you mention all supply/make kits, but I feel they are all at the very low end of hobby. In looking for a gun the biggest factor I see is the ability to adjust the power, without this you will find it hard to get into tight corners, and will not be able to add further coats.

I've have a profoma invoice sat in my inbox from Caswell for a kit, just need to get round to paying it

Hi Gav, I had thought about going to a pro shop but I would be a wannabe hobby shopper. Cheap gun with old kitchen oven in the garage. ( I don't think I will be doing car wheels.....pity ) Do you think a pro shop would even entertain such a rival?

Hi Shox, Interesting Caswell gave you time to pay !!!!!
Being a newbie I don't understand. Surely adjusting the power on a gun is simply increasing the PSI on the compressor or do you mean the electric current in the item being coated please?
So despite your purchasing from good old caswell (a couple of moonraker's by the way) Which is a good start do you think. Electromagic/Eastwood or the more expensive caswell unit? or should that be, why did you choose the more expensive caswell system?

A Pro-Forma invoice is issued before the goods are despatched, and needs to be paid in advance.

Personally i wouldn't have a chassis done, my coater didn't recommend it either.
