thats probably why there is such a big market for used vices.
who in their right mind would pay that for a vice.
its just not realistic is it.

at my last job we bourght 20 new record 4inch vices not sure the number and the students broke 5

The Record vice I broke was older than me... 
I don't think much of the newer Irwin (record style) vices; 6tonne, 6t, etc. but the older patent models still seem good; t25, t36, etc. (I've just had a look at Irwin's site and it seems as though they have stopped making the older larger one's...

There is an even more expensive vice than Record's, the Swinden, the absolute Rolls Royce of Vices !! The jaw head can revolve 360 deg around the handle axis to allow the work to be positioned at the convenience of the operator. Body is cast steel and all working parts are enclosed so it's impervious to contamination. The Army even attaches one at the top of their bulldozer blades so they always have a vice handy !

Just had a look on Amazon.com at the price of a Wilton 6" Machinist vice, basically like a Record but with the same type of tension screw arangement as the Wilton revolving vice pictured above. It is $1600 retail but available at the special offer price of $1050'ish !!! Shipping would probably cost almost as much !

Shipping charges are a no-no. Right now, if I had old vices, like the Records, Swindens, Parkinsons, Wodens, etc. I'd be hanging on to them.
I did manage to source 2 Wilton's (from an alternative distributor). This one's on my metal horse thing. I thought it was crap, at first, but it's taken so much "stick", that I am actually ashamed to give particulars...
This one's still boxed (re-badged Wilton) and waiting in storage (it's really well made & a delight to use);
There's a new Record T36 (From Irwin) on my bench and another one, still boxed, waiting in storage, with a swivel base. They are just awesome for sheer strength; what they seem to lose in adaptability (compared to Swinden's), they make up for in stability;

Ah ha !! I'd often wondered where Snap-On sourced their vices, mystery solved !
Am currently making a portable vice stand for the Swinden so I'll postpone showing a pic until it's finished, it's quite a novel stand design though, so worth the wait !
My other vices are, Record 6" quick adjust, bought from a factory closing sale but in excellent condition, Record 5" heavy duty general purpose, brand new, off ebay from a dealer that was having a stock clearance, price was irresistible, Record 4" general purpose, my first vice bought brand new about 20 years ago and even then I thought expensive at £79 !!! Then of course the Swindens, acquired when I closed down the family business about 6 years ago, still almost as new as I was the only one allowed to use it !
Swindens are still going and they do have a web site.
PS, I notice that the Wiltons have anti pinch washers as standard !

I have often wondered if it would be better to mount the Swinden types on the side of the bench, that way it wouldn't be on the top taking up "real estate" and could be quite useful there...

Yeah... for such an important, cheap & little detail, you'd think they'd be standard from all manufacturers! I guess it's worth asking the "Snapy chapie" for spares...

Thats given me an idea !
Hmmm, for vices not supplied with them, how about a thick O ring pushed over the ends ?

Did you all notice that the rubber buffers I mentioned that were fitted on vise handles are on all the vise's pictured in Knoba's post number 34. Get yours done NOW.and save a few blood blisters.
