Thankyou both @Arc Tourist & @MattF - I've never seen one with such a simple cranked retainer -it seems to work OK anyways !

I hadn't realised that it was my 1st post - I am a long time lurker who principally does woodwork and in my prior workshop I had room to have a small 800 x 1.5m metalworking bench principally for fabricating jigs and guards for some of my woodworking machines - bandsaw, spindle molder etc and I bought an R-Tech AC/DC 200A TIG/MMA welder and being self-taught I learnt loads from browsing this forum for hints/tips/techniques.

So a big thankyou to the many forum members whose experience I have benefitted and learnt from - I seriously doubt I had much to contribute in return ...unless you want to fab something in timber !!

Wood is good. I've worked with it most of my lifetime for others, with metalwork, machining & fabrication for myself being my personal pleasure.

I have done some digging as to the vintage of my No. 23 and it certainly predates the 1950's Record catalogue but is a match for the one illustrated in the 1935 catalogue.
Certainly in the 1976 catalogue the business -end of the screw c/w tommy bar shows the No.23 adopted the more modern oil-drum shape as opposed to the prior almost teardrop one and all the catalogues prior to that show the teardrop shape.
WRT the slide guide, the only catalogue showing no 2-screw retainer is the 1935 one - all subsequent show the more usual 2 screw-attached cage.

I've not searched extensively to see if I can find other Record catalogues 1936-1949 to narrow down the age of mine but it is deffo pre-1950 and post 1935 - so it's older than myself !!

I have it now jaws aside fully dismantled and ready to clean and will admit given its age it appears to have had a quiet life as no visible wear on the slides and very few dings around the jaws..
