Identifying 3phase or Not

This seems to be fairly common on European machines. (Cebora etc)
I think (in Italy at least) they have both 240v and 415v single phase supplies available

was common on the old
hobart and lincoln dinosaur tig machines
2,phases and an earth
split phase some sparkys called it very heavy cables and fuses needed my old hobart
cybertig used to dim the lights when you stomped on the pedal
we are at the end of a line and my neighbour could tell if i was welding

Sounds similar to our standard 240 volt single phase.
(2) hots, each 120 v to neutral, hot-to-hot is 240 v
also known as split phase as well.

As the shielding on the cable could have been used for earth .....and with the kVa rating I'd guess at 2 phase....it's a long trip to find out though...

Ypou can't use the shielding on SY cable as earth. Well, you CAN but it's not designed for it and it would be very bad practice.

No but you should earth the braid. Otherwise it can become live in the event of cable damage.

It has 4 hot wires.

"Split Phase" uses only 2 hots, and a neutral (not ground, that is separate)

Does/Did the Uk have real "2-phase" ?

My guess is 415v from two phases.

They key thing to look for is if it has 220/240v listed. seeing 1 phase listed would be misleading without the voltage.

It might be possible to find a big transformer to supply it from 240v if it expects 415v "single phase". Some old stick welders can be rewired to be used as a step up transformer.

Yes, historically 2 phase 90 degree supplies did exist in the UK, but I doubt it still exists anywhere now.

We can obviously get a 2 phase 120 degree supply from the standard 3 phase supply.

Split phase supplies also exist, usually in rural areas.

Nope, not with SY. Weve been through this before on here and @brightspark got the last word on it from a EIC technical expert. SY braid is for mechanical protection only.

The braid on SY and CY cables is intended for EMC screening, how and where it is connected to earth will depend on the exact requirements of any particular installation. The braid provides little to no mechanical protection.

SY is galvanised steel wire for mechanical protection, CY is copper braid for EMC

Yes in the sense of being supplied with two out of three phases. I've seen this in two village halls and one former school. Presumably in those cases it was just to provide enough capacity rather than for an actual two phase function.

Yes, they said it was not a current carrying conductor. You used to be able to read the exchange on the voltimum page but it's no longer visible, I think you have to be logged in.

tried bringing it up again but cant find the post even though its used it is not british standard and it is classed as a controll cable

The problem with it is, the braid shouldn't be used as an earth but it should be at ground potential so you don't get any induced voltage on a long run of it but IF it did get a screw through it it becomes live inside the plastic cover, it will probably melt with the fault current if it is earthed though. Poxy stuff I see all the time on site.
