Can anyone advise regarding this pillar drill motor noise please?

Hi all,
Managed to pick up my first pillar drill, secondhand, effectively new old stock, it has been in storage for several years, has some surface rust here and there.
I am not familiar with this size of pillar drill, is this noise normal after switching it off as the motor spools down? It is at around 6/7 seconds.

Nothing to worry about.

It's the centrifugal switch cutting back in, which then essentially creates a bit motor braking as the main coils then power the start coils/capacitor.

Just wondering if it's a centrifugal brake trying to
operate, but not succeeding
Although, this size of drill wouldn't normally have
that type of device.

Excellent thank you knew someone here would have the technical knowledge of what it was. The gamble paid off! Bit of a bargain.

Should the spindle outer machined surface be greased/ oiled? Or will that attract rubbish ? It has some surface rust at the mo and is a little hesitant to retract back up

I would certainly gently clean up the outer surface of the quill and keep it lightly oiled.
Also, the return spring enthusiasm can be adjusted to a degree by adjusting the spring
retaining nut.

I'd agree with the above, light clean and oil, although I would curb the enthusiasm on retracting up, if it needs a little nudge to help it on its way thats fine, you really don't want them springing up aggressively.

An alternative to oil could be wax (bees, furniture).

Don't overdo tightening the spring. It shouldn't retract, it should stay where you put it ideally.

Often the top pulley over the quill shaft has a drilling or part of the key way ... usually covered by a felt wad . Add several drops of light machine oil in the recess and it will help lubricate the shaft .

The taper should be kept very clean, but essentially dry IMO...
I suppose that RSE (Return Spring Enthusiasm) is rather subjective
between folks.
I have mine set at a sweet spot (for me). This may differ for others.
It doesn't spring back violently at all. It only means that, on the
odd occasion that the bit has jammed, or whatever, and that I have
stopped the drill, I can then use both hands to free it, and when it
frees it lifts itself back up. Whilst maintaining it's composure and
dignity...
I hope I'm making sense ??

Personally, I prefer the quill to retract like a bear-trap and adjust the spring accordingly; however, that is not good practice (as @julianthegypsy rightly says) .

A touch of oil (not grease) on the outside of the quill. You'll never get sphincter-shaking, high-speed retraction with grease getting in the way. And not too much oil: it just sprays in your face when the quill slams back home.

Nothing in the taper, as @roofman says.

I end up trying to hold the handle with my elbow until everything is positioned then slither my arm back until I can grab the handle while I turn the drill on with my other hand. Or I swear. Yes @julianthegypsy , I have lived your pain.
On those occasions, I use the depth stop in a reverse kind
of way to keep the quill where I want it.

It's a whole lot easier if it just stays where you put it!
