Was that not common in the days of folk playing pocket billyards through the overall pockets! Machine shops were cold places in the old days!

A colleague and I were operating a bespoke crane at 2500psi when a 4" dia, 8" long filter casing exploded next to us, as in within a couple of feet. The gusher shot straight up, stayed still for a millisecond then toppled like a tree. How neither of us were hit by the casing shrapnel I'll never know.
Turns out the filter maker had incorrectly labeled a batch of aluminium return filter casings as for high pressure. From memory the one that went bang was rated for around 500psi but give it it's due had been running for about 5 years before it gave up.
The filter supplier came out same day and replaced with the correct, cast iron, high pressure filter.

Sadly thats the case, think the old one was about 9 years old and it does get a lot of use.Except for the spider and drum assembly . It's becoming the case that if your washer is over 6 yrs old you're better off buying a newer more modern machine with a 2 yr warrantee on it .

They're consumables. It's nice to keep something running beyond its years, but the initial design has to cater for that. If it doesn't, replace.
Sounds like you've had your money's worth out of it.
Common in mechanic . hydraulic fittters and machine shops due to handling JT with out having clean hands and from stuffing oily rags on side and back pockets . Went to the Factories Act place near Earles Court back in 1974 spent three days learning about implementing the new HASAW act 1974
Sent one of the days doing study of some horrific disasters due to not practicing HASAW :-
Felix brough explosionn ..the rupture concertina high pressure pipe failure . A guy who used hisd head as the earth on a 480 volt over head crane open power supply ... it melted a 6" x6" x 1/2" thick angle iron the shape of head down to his ears . Saw loads of dermatitis jobs in all areas of the body some on dead bodies .

Glad it wasn’t just me then - open gear ‘grease’ - more like bitumen, with added sawdust, I went ballistic at them and complained to management, a lot of good that did. I claimed for my ruined jeans so the transport manager said fine, but it comes out of the Christmas party fund, I took the money anyway.

^ I had that happen on a 1/2" extension. It must just have been rubbish, I'm never putting all that much torque into stuff, but I'd used it for years without any problems.

To follow up, the new tube cost an extortionate £6.49, and our regular motor factors had them on the shelf, which says how often they must get broken (never buy an oil drainer with a side mounted level tube!)I broke the brand new oil drainer at work last night.
Went to step past it, caught the level tube with my boot, which snapped the level tube top and bottom, send a spray of oil 2 metres across the floor, and resulted in a little fountain of oil from the remains.
And for a further follow up, it's going to be a lot cheaper than the tech who managed to explode a Norbar torque wrench ratchet last night. He went to pull his socket off it, and there was an explosion of pawls and springs around him
