Ronseal fence paint separating

Mixed thoroughly and sprayed with a Ronseal sprayer onto normal untreated shiplap. It has been left bare for a year before I got around to the job, since I hate painting so much, because this sort of thing always happens:

I’m like the Jonah of painting.

It seems to have separated into pigment and water on contact with the wood. A roller just lifts it off.

Thanks, I’m sure you’re right, but I’ve got 100s of sqm to do, and how do I get to all the surfaces with the sander? I’d be better off letting the shiplap rot and replacing it every now and then. Poo.

If you just bought it try some on scrap wood, if still does it take it back.
BTW pressure washing wood can make it all lovely and fluffy, not that I would have done that

Use the aggressive twirly attachment. It will get rid of the oxidised surface wood and leave a nice rough finish that is perfect for these water-based stains to penetrate.
Maybe spray with a strong detergent solution first to remove any surface oil contamination if you suspect that is an issue.

Not that I know of - I bought it from Screwfix last week. I’ll try on a different piece of wood tomorrow - got fed up and sat in the sun with a beer instead.

This is two different batches of untreated whitewood, bought about a year apart, and on different sides of the building, so I can’t imagine any oil contamination, unless there’s something in the production process.

i was getting that for 25 quid a drum last year got 3 drums of it as the price has gone up but still cheaper than in that addy

Too much on in one covering. If there’s problems like silicone, wax or anything oil related it can exaggerate if it’s too thick first coat. To do it right it need to be a ‘dry coat’ then the second coat can attach itself to it better as it then absorbs into the first one. A dry coat coat is using hardly any paint on the roller/brush/gun and it drys rapid.

I watched the ex-es less than DIY minded soon to be-ex-husband use one of those sprayers to use more fence paint on three fence panels than I do on three entire sheds.
