A life lesson learnt again, don't assume a van with an MOT is in any fit state to purchase and assume all Mk7 Transits are rotten unti proven otherwise..

The wife has bought a camper and this is our first MOT (we've only done 20 miles in it, parked up for winter).

Should have had a good poke around before she bought it but they already had their heart set on it and didn't want to to be Debbie Downer, but it has bitten me in the **** unfortunately.

Will post a few updated but this is for my own motivation really.

Someone mentioned injecting rust treatment into the frame repairs with a pressure pot, what's best stuff to use before cavity wax?.

Anyway, though I'd start at the front and work backwards, bought some 2.5mm steel for the frame rail repairs.

Already found another
bit that needs doing behind back wheel, on top of what it failed on, need to stop looking lol.

There's a fair bit to do unfortunately.

Migh as well do it all while I'm at it, treat all the box sections and give it a fighting chance for a few years.

I have one 2 years newer, looks like new underneath. Eat it's own engine though...For sale as soon as I sort the slipping clutch out. It's a nice drive when working, but otherwise a pile of poo.

Our camper is a van conversion on a mk6, took it for MOT yesterday, passed, no advisories. The tester says every time “this aught to be rotten but it fine. Did a small amount of welding on the sill under the door, but at 20 years old, only to be expected. A friend of ours has the same camper, but an a mk7, 3 years newer & his is showing signs of rot to come. It seems to be luck of the draw.

does the other side in the engine bay look ok?

they have a reputation for rotting right through till the engine mount falls off :-o

I'll have a good luck at the mount, thanks for the heads up.

It's strange that some Mk7's are rot free and some are beyond saving.

Must be winter use that sees them off?.

Chassis area where the rear bump stops are,both sides,even if it feels or looks solid check it, chances are it wont be,cut out and weld in,dont over plate,they rot from the inside
FWD or RWD?
On FWD up the bonnet and check where the engine mounting(esp os) is on the rail,you can take the mount off if you prop engine from underneath,have a good poke
Check sill under the foot wells both sides,just behind the stupid designed worthless mud flaps

I was quite lucky with mine didnt have anywhere near as much rot as those i've stitched back together,but as i knew where they go i cut and repaired those places anyway
Oh and squirt as much horrible sticky stuff you can into that chassis/sills etc
