Preparing wheels

How would you go about preparing wheels? I have two spares but they could all use it eventually.

I dont want to spend ages manually removing all of the old paint, much of it appears ok, so I am thinking to get the loose stuff off, key the rest with p600, epoxy primer and filler, basecoat then 2k.

One has a slow leak from the rim/bead.

Would you use basecoat/clearcoat all over, or just the face and leave the inside in epoxy, or clear over epoxy?

if your going to that extent with quality paints get em blasted

The face of the weeks is not too bad. Its mostly the inside diameter around the brake disc and the bead area, one has a slow leak that I want to fix. Plus the immovable brake dust.

The new-to-me one thats on the ground in the pic has some.corrosion on the face.

I had set of VW wheels that went porous, ally was corroded on inside of rim, painted them but they still leaked. but was only cheep rattle can job.
Powder coating is what most recommend.

Local place was 25 each, about 16 or 17 years ago. I can imagine £100 or more.

Fully refurbished I imagine 300-400?

Luckily the cosmetic areas, shouldnt need a great amount of prep, so it shouldnt take all that long to do a good job.

I dislike powder coating. A thin layer of plastic wrapping the item but only weakly bonded to the metal. A slight chip, water and corrosion gets under and lifts it off.

600 is a bit too fine to prime over, have a look at what the datasheet for your epoxy says but probably around 320 needed.
You will need to apply basecoat to the inner side first then move to the face second, on every coat. Otherwise you risk overspray or bad patterning on the "on show" face.
Don't bother leaving the inner side in primer it will look a bit naff. And you will have plenty of basecoat in a 1L tin so might as well use it.

If there is corrosion showing on the alloy I suggest you get them bead blasted to get rid of it. There will be a lot more hiding under the paint and it will give you a good key for painting.

Ill check, my car is going in tomorrow to have all the wheels done. thought i had a slow punture, turns out the wheel was leaking at the rim :/

From what I remember on the phone call, for my 19" wheels its was 68+VAT per wheel, and an extra 70+vat for diamond cutting
