So, finally managed to get round to looking at my 150 quid Harrison universal. Seller claimed he had no idea why the handwheel wouldn’t move the X axis, after further investigation the issue(s) came to light.
Number 1, the lead screw had quite a fantastic bend in the middle. Some gentle persuasion has pulled the worst of it out- at some point I’ll measure the pitch and dia and see if I can find some acme stock and make a new one.
The second issue was the shear pin in the handwheel had gone. Seller assured me he hadn’t touched anything as he knows nothing about them, however it had all clearly been apart and half heartedly reassembled, so I think he’s been in it and not been able to work it out. Still not sure how he managed to bend the screw- there’s no evidence of it having been ripped over etc!
