My first cat early 70's was a ferrule female, Dad felt sorry for her sat in a cage destined for destruction in the gatehouse at work. He bought "it" home in a cardboard box, a bit feisty was the description. Slight understatement to his amusement.
Took a while to settle then started getting fat. My Mother came and dragged me out of Primary school so l could see the kittens born.
The kittens drove my Father mad, he boxed them up with the Mother and took them away to be rehomed.
I think having animals and looking after them as a child - sort of "gears you up" - for having your own kids and looking after them.
My Dad was big and rough - he really was... But he was OK - really patient with the dogs/kid/cats in the house...
His dad - my Grandad was another chap who was kind to kids and animals...
