Is there such a thing as a 12v oil pump that can be fitted to work as well as the standard machanical one as i want to put an oil cooler in the front of a beach buggy that is a old style rear engined aircooled vw chassi

For what it's worth, we put a rear rad and oil cooler in the back of a Landrover Challenge truck, to keep them out of the crap. Both the oil and water cooling circuits run fine on the original pumps, no extra pumps required.

why not get a water oil cooler like the 2.8 Capri's has fitted between the oil filter and plate. you can then pump water round the car instead of the oil. If you got a leak the n you would only loose water and a bit of cooling. if you were pumping oil round the car and that sprung a leak you'd be knackered.

Don't you think the mechanical pump in the engine will do the job though. That is the usual way to plumb in an oil cooler. Surely there is enough room to fit it in the rear and duct cooling air to it rather than the long plumbing to the front?

Stockish type 1 engine or a lairy 2 ltr + turbo charged thing? What sort of oil temps are you seeing? If stockish is it running the later 'dog house' fan shroud and larger stock cooler? Is all tinware correct and present?

Usual solution when additional cooling is needed on a beetle is to mount the cooler by/above the gearbox, ducted and/or with a fan. Obviously a less than an ideal location but less of a headache with regards to protecting miles of plumbing. As long as the oil lines are 1/2" or larger ID an additional pump won't be needed, 'stock' pumps are available in various sizes from 26mm upto over 30mm should you feel the need- everyone (used to at least) use a high volume pump when building an engine and typically get the opposite problem i.e. too much pressure pegging the pressure relief valves open and cooking the engine as the oil then bypasses the stock cooler!

Thanks guys the oil is running a bit hotter than usaul even after a full survice and new stock oil cooler so i think i will just mount one above the gearbox if there is room for one with a fan but as the oil is the only method of cooling and lubrication i dont want to lose preassure.

That's the vacuum pump for the brake servo, but it could be used as a oil circulation pump.

Thanks guys the oil is running a bit hotter than usaul even after a full survice and new stock oil cooler so i think i will just mount one above the gearbox if there is room for one with a fan but as the oil is the only method of cooling and lubrication i dont want to lose preassure.

Maybe i'm missing something but if it's running hotter than it used to then fitting an additional cooler is addressing the symptoms rather than the cause...

But to get i was thinking about mounting the oil cooler at the frount to get it to work better but the car is rear engined and i dont want to lose vital oil preassure as this could cause damage to a soon to be a brand new home built engine.

If you really do want to put the cooler at the front go back to your original idea with an electric pump and use a bypass cooler.

Arrange the pickup tube to be just above the minimum level in the sump, that way if the cooler or any of the hoses start to leak the oil will not drop below minimum.

Some sort of oil level warning would be good, and you'll have to make sure the oil is always topped up.

A pressure gauge after the electric pump may be OK, an oil temperature gauge on the block or sump might be better.

That would be a good way to it with an inline pump but not the easiest thing to engineer with a type 1 VW engine. There is no seperate sump and being a flat 4 not much in the way of room around the crankcase. An 'add on' deep sump is typically used with a 'built' engine, some are deep enough for this to work but they reduce ground clearence significantly. I've welded many threaded bosses onto deep sump kits for the local VW race engine builder but always for turbo returns/drains.

The solution that the VW world has developed over the last 30 - 40 odd years for tuned engines is this...

To provide proper filtration the crankcase is drilled and tapped at the main oil gallery local to the oil pump. The oil pump outlet is blocked and oil is rerouted through the pump cover (sometimes this cover incorporates an adjustable pressure relief when a high volume pump is used) to an oil filter and returned to the main gallery. When an extra oil cooler is needed this circuit is used i.e. a thermostatically controlled oil cooler is added, typically the cooler is mounted by the gearbox (ducted/fan) but some of the euro look guys front mount 'em as the later cars have more room behind the front valence which is also handily louvred.

This subject has probably been done to death on the aircooled forums as it's not new ground, i'll see if i can find a discussion on the topic...
