Welder to restore car batteries?

It's the same with tyres - don't confuse 'OE' (original equipment) with 'OEM' - they're not the same specification. Even if the replacement is bought from a franchised dealer.
Personally, I don't worry once the design life (up to 5 years for a starter battery) is exceeded - just get a replacement of the correct specification.

I reckon most batteries - last just over the ten year mark now on cars.

BMS systems have improved allot. It helps if the car is used on regular basis..

Only early fails I remember is Ford smartcharge and EFB batteries - they were lucky to get out of warranty.

In my experience, EFB never last.
I'm pretty sure the only reason they were fitted, was they're cheaper than AGM.

Vivaros/Trafics were still using EFB, and I had to change quite a few under warranty.
Anything outside warranty with a EFB, now gets an AGM.

that aside, there's some old school skills there. Thing's we've lost.

Easier to sit on our phones and order one than "do".

Lead-Calcium batteries were prone to failing unless they were kept above ~50% charge, it was always entertaining to see a vehicle where the Pb-Ca battery had been replaced with something else, they were usually gassing well in winter due to the raised charge voltage in low temperatures!

Never had any success either. I still have a pack of Batt Aid tablets somewhere. They didn't work either.

Why is it though, that the original battery that comes on the vehicle when new, lasts years, and any replacement does four or five if you are lucky.

Even if you pay a lot for one of the same brand.

The one on my Renault lasted 17 years. The one on SWMBOs Jimny is ten years old.

I had to replace the battery in my Sorento (21 years old)last year. When I took the old one out I noticed that the date "strip" was unmarked but the last date it could have been was13 years ago. Can't remember the make but it was not one I had heard of.
