Is anything selling on eBay?

I used to an fanboy of Ebay, buyer mostly, but then I notest the odd seller prices, £53.63 & £348.73 etc & I thoght how odd, when I looked into it, now Ebay are
adding buyers fees! so really off putting now.
If I sell anything it's large, so collection & cash only, too risky these days for Paypal payment as buyers can lie through their teeth swap parts & claim refund for not working,
so not doing that.
I just use it for new stuff now.

It's the ebay fee.
Previously, if I listed and sold an item for £30 then I paid £2.96 to ebay in fees.

Now, it's 'free' for sellers.
So, I list an item at £30 and ebay passes the fee onto the buyer so the total showing is £32.96.

Most sellers are actually happy to pay the ebay fee so will list an item for £27.04 so the buyer still pays £30.

However, items listed before this system was introduced are all showing odd £ amounts (unless the seller has updated the listing) and for the first few months of the new system it was quite hard to work out exactly what would be shown to the buyer.
(They have a caculator for it now)
Then, a few weeks ago, the fee amount changed again so all those items show an odd price now as well...

As both seller and buyer I'm not too worried if I buy or sell an item for £29.87 rather than £30 or £29.99..

Private sellers are mostly using 'simple delivery' now so the insurance is covered by that (plus ebay make a decent bit of profit on it as well..)

Business sellers have whatever insurance cover they can get via whatever carrier they choose to use. Most just "self-insure" for the lower value items.

Yes but ebay has now become the seller and offers full buyer protection if you dont get the item or its not as described...the person with the item is basicly handing over all rights and control of what they are selling to ebay, your now just the gatherer for the shop window...great for buyers but selling has a sting in the tail using ebay these days.

Still a fan of eBay for this very reason, I have had eBay sellers calling me because I haven’t acknowledged receipt of an item,their money won’t be released until eBay know the item has been delivered, hence the reason most sellers use tracked deliveries these days.

yes me too, have good results buying off ebay this end.

Yes, and it works. I had some vintage brass door pulls go astray, nearly £80 worth.
Ebay paid the buyer for loss and I kept my payment.

As a business seller. Not by choice ebay forced me onto it we don't get free listings.

As for sellers fees v insurance its all a bit confusing.

I sold a vintage spotting scope on ebay and it turns out that the buyer was in Australia so it went in their "global shipping" thing, couple weeks later I got a message off ebay telling me it was "prohibited export" - it wasn't but they refunded the buyer and let me keep the cash then destroyed it, so they said.

If you are suggesting that Amazon and Ebay don't pay every penny legally due, then you may well hear from their lawyers.

But the point is that they DO pay every penny legally due, so I am not sure what YOUR point is?

I sell the odd item on ebay, mainly restored valve radios and the odd camera when i thin out my collections, a few years ago i could sell a couple of items each week, but from last year to present it had slumped off to virtually nil, and the views have also. There are rumors that ebay are pushing non business sellers views down by offering free promoted listings to registered business sellers on there, where as casual sellers have to pay a sliding scale percentage in order to have their listings promoted, then the new addition of 'buyer protection fees' added onto every listing makes competitive pricing harder as it forces the seller to price the item lower to keep inline with other sellers prices. Add the fact that once you have reached the £1200 or £1400 threshold (cannot remember the figure exactly) they will pass your details onto HMRC to monitor for potential taxation of further earnings. Put simply, as sad as it is, Ebay may be dead now for the likes of you and I, i sell more stuff on marketplace, its free, but you have to filter through scammers, time wasters and potential non shows. Have to be way more vigilant.
