Been here before with semi stray feral cats in the yard over the years. They just dig in and go hide up when they are unwell.

Reckon this one got FIV - that why he lost an eye and struggling with infection with only a small cut on his rear paw pad.

Guess he only three years old - been feeding him since he was a lost kitten - before he got his second teeth - from about June 2023.

Doing nothing is not on the cards - but as you rightly say, failure is always a very sad reality...

If you don’t mind me saying, I think we are two of a kind whereby we’d never give up . Which means failure is never an option.
If you were closer I’d willingly come and help you catch him.
Let’s hope it goes well , he responds to the antibiotics and he gets better quickly.

I won't sleep very well tonight - I will be up early - before anybody is about/before daylight. I've been feeding him - I the one with the best chance to get him out.

Then it is into the workshop loo - there will be lots of meowing/noise. I will be urinating up a hedge till Vet nurse lands as we only got one toilet.

Then after he been manhandled - stinging injection. He will be back into the hedge for days and difficult to feed.

I know what is coming - but I got no other options.

This is not a domestic cat/dog - you throw into a car and go up the vets and just pay. I am lucky I got a sympathetic vet to be honest. Most would just offer to put a stray cat down and leave it at that. If you ring the RSPCA - they just take them away and euthanize them.

Semi stray wild cats - are seen as a nuisance to some/most people...

At my mate's old breakers yard there were quite a few ferals and litters of kittens.
We wangled a way of catching the ones we could in improvised traps, ie light mesh cages that were baited with grub and you hide round the corner, pull string when cat goes in cage etc !
This cartoon style scheme actually worked numerous times (much to our surprise), we would of course make sure to know where the kittens were hiding and scoop them up fairly easily.
We had a kind of 'standing order' with the local cat's protection league lady, who'd take them into their system. We would then get news of how they were doing and the ones who got homed etc which was nice.
The very wild ones were spayed an re-released as you'd not be able to home them anyway like the kittens were, the released ones still hung about the yard but could be fed and kept an eye on.
I've got two of the kittens from there at home, gawd, they're 7 and 10 years old now & my mate has 3 at his gaff, including one of the wild mums who has surprisingly tamed quite well (eventually! )

in some ways it might be best if you can catch him again to try and keep him in somewhere if you've a spare room/ enclosed area , whatever, then he could be fed and watched, and taken for more vet-ing if needs be. just a thought

Always (7) had strays/ wild things.
They have all turned out to be friendly in the end. The oldest was 22 when we had to part with her broke my hart, but she was not enjoying life the last month.
There is a ginger long haired in the offing, beloved is not as keen as me on cats tells me you have done cats .

One of our strays made the mistake of taking on the neighbour's peacock. It didn't go well for the cat.

07.10am - yardcat successfully contained in workshop toilet with food/water/basket/litter tray.

Allot of initial moewing - but he has calmed down in about 15mins.

Also he got beat up over night - looks like his left ear has blood on it....

Our one had the vet booked last night but managed to escape 5 minutes before departure
I enticed him out from his "hole" in the garden bushes with a meat stick treat. He wasn't happy.
He had his jabs and a checkup and weighed the same as last year so that's his MOT done for another year.

That's brilliant, at least you can get him properly sorted and back to health before he goes 'into action' again

We run again Monday morning - with same plan - catch/confine another injection.

Gonna try keep him main workshop overnight tonight/over weekend (away from other cats).

I know he's not going to like it but I really think keeping him in for a bit is a good idea.
