Hydraulic press

Hi everyone, I am considering getting a hydraulic press nothing to excessive it’s mainly for doing wheel bearings on cars etc, but I was wondering what would be the ideal tonnage for my hobbyist workshop

at leasy twice as big as you think you need ,,, its always that way.


20t good start though. , 30 is nicer.

My experience says 20 ton and some bearings/bushes need to be cranked up to the max before they move

without a gauge, I have no idea what sort of pressure my cheap car jack style press is getting up to when things go bang and start moving but it certainly gets hard to jack it any more at times.

We bought a Vevor 6 ton hydraulic press to do car bushings.

It coped with rubber bushings but I'm not sure it would be up to wheel bearings. If you can afford to go bigger I would, just because it will be more versatile. You can always sell it on after you've finished your projects in order to recover the extra cost.

Edit: just seen your new post. 20 ton would be much better than ours.

I have a 10T and it's sometimes not enough. Go at least 20 as mentioned above.

I have a 15 ton floor press here, and it doesn't ever get bothered by anything that I do.
Then again, I'm a subtle sort of bloke, and have a blowtorch, as well as some CO2 extinguishers.....

I made one from bits of scrap,whathaveyou,Its a 10 ton,its done ok since the build,but yes have to agree 20 ton would of been better

I have a 20t and its more than capable for everything I've asked of it

as has been discussed before, bigger is better, don't get one that is used to it's
limit or you'll find springback is a problem.
For example, I just changed out one of my Taco's rear wheel bearing, and it took all 20 tons, and let off with a bang.

A lighter framed press could fail catastrophically and you might get hurt.

I have a 10 ton bench top press and it often hasn't been enough, I have had to pump it up to 10T and hit the lower plate on the press with a hammer to get things moving, not too hard and it's always worked for me but I would prefer not to.

i have a clarke press but i also use a blowlamp as well but have advantages when using the press

ive known some not even give with the press but the usage of the blowlamp helps to free it

mine's a twenty five tonner ...

Quite often I need something bigger....
Then I go to the tractor shop as they have a hundred tonner one....one occ a Big Reno van needed 55 ton to break a front hub bearing......
go as big as u can...

I had a 20 ton floor press from Machine Mart. From memory there are two models... an economy model (chinese Manufacture) and premium ( Italian) which was the one I purchased. I had heard rumours that the economy struggled to deliver the full 20 tons.
The Premium model was more than capable of doing all the jobs on my classic cars. Not used very often but invaluable when required.

twatting under pressure not recommended

my son did this and the result was a bent pin and bent cross supports when everything fired out sideways

i had the same issue but the part wouldnt give under full pressure however i got told some advice about using the blow lamp and then press it out

so i put some pressure on it and then used the blow lamp and suddenly the part gave rather well and fast then it was add some more pressure and the old part came out easily

I got a Clarke 10 tonner off indy4x and while it's a cracking press, it did fail to pop a hub apart the other week without liberal use of heat. Nothing against the press, just needed more grunt behind it.

If I were buying one for car work it would be a 20t minimum.
