Hello from France

Hey all,

I've been reading the forum for a little while now, and - since you appear to be a rather knowledgeable and friendly bunch - I thought I should finally sign up and get to know you all.

I'm a fifty-odd-year-old Brit who lives and farms in Aveyron in France. My business requires that I do quite a bit of welding simply in order to keep broken kit running; however, I am far from good at it. I can do strong or I can do pretty: I have given up on ever making both happen at the same time.

My personal passion is machining, having been brought up around it, and having a father who thought it normal to put milk crates in front of lathes and milling machines to enable his six-year-old son to reach the hand-wheels.

My workshop is currently in a mess as I am moving it between buildings on the farm, and have little time to devote to the process. Must try harder!

Oh, I also rather like vices, a subject upon which I note you already have a wonderful thread running.

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you.

I also live in Aveyron, in the Segala around Rieuperoux. Been here 3 and a half years. Old house, young family, lots of work to do! Workshop is also a mess...

Just bought my first lathe, an old P. Hure 1m bed 20cm height. Although I know nothing about machining metal yet...

I find it quite hard round here to get old machine tools, but its great for woodworking machinery (am a menuisier)
Its always good to meet more people who are into this kind of stuff!

I used to live in Charent M/time.....17 years man and boy....been here 6......
AS for machine tools, just dont give up buying used or even new over there, it cost nothing to look.......it's rare to find anything used worth it's weight...
but
The Frogs believe everything they have is worth a fortune....even when junk......
I gave up trying to buy either metal or wood equipment....
Machine tools, it was almost as cheap to buy new.....
All my used engineering tools came from the UK, brought back on visits...my big lathes, mills and wood machines I imported before Brexit tho.....
I'd order stuff to be delivered to a MATE then once or twice a year go back n get it.....no idea now tho.....
Similar probs here but the locals are more friendly about pricing......
As for new tooling I dont buy much but most of what I get comes from Poland, Germany and China......
anywhere else it's just to costley and or stressful....
