Chimney Cowl

One of mine has a sheet of lead formed over it with a ~3/4" hole in the centre. It's formed so the water runs away from the hole and over the side. Some rain must go in but more must evaporate as the chimney's not in use and there doesn't appear to be any damp issues.

Edit; but the cap that allows ventilation, linked above, looks like a better option. Id want the legs to be stainless though.

Lead is a pretty good idea though if a manufactured one is proving hard to find. With a tiny bit of work, you could lead weld/solder a cap on short legs on above the hole to stop any rain, other than if driving, getting in there?

Thinking to fire up the plasma in the morning and cut a say 16" circle out of some thin stainless sheet I have here as a start. Maybe drag the torch round an old wheel rim.

Thinking won't a flat plate be noisy in the rain?

Is a conical cowl necessary?

I've no method either of rolling a downturn/lip on said disc.

I'm pretty sure you could easily make a cowl from a stainless disc by cutting along the radius and then lapping joining along the cut. Add a few rivets along the join plus rivet on some legs and it's kind of done?

We did ours with cowls from the local roof place...the were just painted steel....seems to be doing fine after 10+ years!

I didn't like the idea of blocking the pots just in case I wanted a fire in future.
