Drilling hard brick work

If we're doing top trumps hole drilling I drilled the holes for these tie rods back around 1996-ish 112mm diameter the longest was 22m deep.

My own fault though, because I was too tight to hire or buy a proper core drill. I had to make a 150mm hole through a three brick thick wall.

Same experience...soil pipe holes cut with my trusty 240v SDS DeWalt ..took a whole day to cut 1 hole...hard work.

The Makita core drill did X2 larger holes at the same house...it just powered thro. I think it was half an hour. Crazy how good it was.

Whats the difference between a core drill and SDS drill out of interest? My limited understanding is you dont use the impact function when core drilling if using an SDS drill. Is a core drill just bigger/turn slower or something else? (I just imagined it was the bits - masonary bit vs core bits that made the difference, rather than the machine turning them?)

Core drills tend to be slower, higher torque and no impact

They are more powerful, low revving have a decent clutch and a long side handle. They do not AFAIK have a hammer action and are too slow to drill small holes.

Not much good for anything else, except mixing mortar or plaster.

SDS drills go bangy bangy, and some turn too.
Core drills go turny turny, and if you are not careful, take you with them.

Basically core drills have a lot more torque, and usually safety clutches so you don't end up with a broken wrist when it catches.
SDS, far less torque but can hammer.

You can get TCT core bits which are designed to work with SDS drills and can be used with the impact function on.
Usually only fairly small holes and they can cause quite a bit of blow out unless you catch it in time and switch it to rotary.
But they are a handy thing to have.

Core drills with a diamond core saw will give a much cleaner hole and they go up to very large sizes, but very much a one trick pony.

If you are putting in something like an extractor fan, you'd be using a core drill, while slapping some cables in or a basin waste and you'll likely get away with an SDS and a TCT bit. A lot also depends on what material you are going through.

I guess thats what confused me as both my small and big SDS drills have the option to turn and not bang, turn and bang and bang but not turn. The small one (parkside and only £40 so cheap) has less torque for sure. The big one (the Titan SDS Max jobby from Screwfix) has more torque than i will ever need (at the moment) and both seem to have clutches and variable speed!

SDS drills tend to be used for small diameter drill bits less than 1.2 inches in diameter . After ythat it's best tio use a core drill . mine go up to 6 inches in diameter .
the secret of both is to let the drill do the woerk , use a slow speet and little presure . Core drills areen't really meant to be used on hammer just a slow steady rotation . if you use hammer on an SDS core drill don't expect the teth to stay on it too long .

I have had a bad week, two days on a bathroom extract fan! Its the most difficult awkward one I have ever done, right in the corner of a hip roof, false ceiling in the bathroom, so no access to fit a traditional flexi pipe to the rear of the vent.
The fitting lights in my new garage and 2m short on the T&E.
Lets hope next week is better

you do i run mine on the 18volt dewalt drill on impact and the higher speed mainly. just give it a good shove

If you use hammer with core drills you are likely to blow the brick faces off ...then some poor sod has to get up a ladder and try to make it all look reasonable ...after cutting out the "fix all problems" expanding foam which has been used to hide the issue
