How much are garages charging?

I'm all for slightly runny whites.
Omelettes, too, that are cooked in the French style.
And real butter is mandatory

I like a "risen omelette" under a grill - in a frying pan... Not sure if that is "French Style" - I just dumb red neck farm boy from Norfolk.

Eggs and butter - not the worst thing you can eat mate...


Anything you getting down your neck and you can report back on - got the wit to report back on - aged 74 is good mate...


If you told me it was "coke and hookers" - I would approve...

If you told me it was "****e food" - I would approve...


But eggs and butter - I really approve of...

So using this as guidance….a heathy diet of Hookers, coke, eggs and the fillet steak is all good for you washed down with white bread and butter plus good wine.

While you can enjoy what you eat - have what you want - enjoy it - as you get older - that maybe all you got left...

The French generally like a loose (runny) top on the omelette. Then fold it in half and serve

pal of mine has a toyota urban cruiser paid £320 for disks and pads on the front
parts were £80 from euro car parts and the garage will be getting them trade and cheaper then that
£240 labour?

Fred, turning the discs would mean having a garage with a lathe and someone who knew how to drive it. You could count on the thumbs of one foot how many garages over here have a lathe, let alone an operator with the relevant paper qualifications to be allowed to use it.

I suspect Fred means a brake lathe - I only know of one place around here that can do it.

I'm told by those more skilled in lathe operation than me its actually quite hard to turn both sides of a brake disc in a conventional lathe and not get pedal wobble.

As an aside, many years ago I was involved in wash plant and chillers that went into Ford/Visteon in Wales (Swansea?) where they made brake discs. Never noticed how they turned them to size.

Regarding garages and conventional lathes - how often would they actually need one? Your usual garage will simply fit a new component - cheaper, quicker, easier, with less potential for cocking it up. Pointless having something taking up space, on the books, for the once in a blue moon it might get used.

Usual max spec for variation in disc thickness is usually 0.05mm, which is nigh on impossible if you're having to flip the disc on a lathe to machine both sides.
In a factory, both sides are usually machined in the one pass, but then they're also often ground to achieve the required surface finish.

The other issue i find is the quality of parts has dropped dramatically. Many suppliers are only carrying the cheapest nastiest parts, brands you've never heard of with horrendous quality.

I use Autodoc for my own stuff if i don't need it urgently. Cheaper than trade prices here, huge selection of brands and good quality ones in stock.

Priced up a Sachs clutch + flywheel the other day; £505 from Autodoc or £603 locally at trade price.

the issue with lots of garages, is that they have lots of tools.
but most of them have no idea how to use the equipment.

Pal of mine who was a proper Sht hot autoelectrician, actually time served, went to Mercedes main dealer and when he asked who operated the diagnostic equipment he was told, nobody. "we are not training people up to use that stuff and have them set up as an independent". Beggars belief.

Runny for me. I'm 74.
As an aside, the hotel we stayed at in Austria a couple of weeks ago had boiked eggs every breakfast time. They were always perfect with lovely, runny yolks.

Turning rotors is very easy.
Even though I did my apprenticeship as a machinist and own a few lathes, I ran my friends (parts store owner)
brake lathe a few times when he got busy with the counter.
Every shop I know of has a brake lathe.

Even the discount chain stores like Autozone have brake lathes and any monkey behind the counter
turns rotors.
And they come out just fine.

Brake discs are 'accountant-designed' with ~2mm of wear in them before hitting minimum thickness, effectively, this means you'll get two sets of brake pads worth of wear out of them before they need changing. in UK/EU, it's just not worth the time & cost of re-facing brake discs.
This is also why Quik-Fit etc. offer brake pads for life, with the high brass content, they know you'll be paying for brake discs every other set of pads, maybe every set.
