theres plenty of folk who want to be in charge ,,, but the trick will be finding a workforce that can actually do the job , rather than telling folk how it should be done ,,,, plenty of tuppenny ha'penny experts about , loads of bright ideas , no clue and no hands ,,, but can talk garbage till the cows come home ....

i had noticed this too but again also related to pay and cost of living, even the last ats euromaster i used for a punture repair had a snap on tool chest filled with halfords finest
not that there is any thing wrong with halfords stuff of late i have a mix of snapon, mac and halfords even the odd brittool
my main socket set that ive had since 2005 is ampro, the ratchets gave up a few years back and got replaced by fine tooth snap-on ratchet's (that are better if im being honest) but snap-on sockets are more like snap-off
I not been in Halfords for along while - I am a 59yr old garage owner - who has owned his own garage for 41yrs and they refused me a "trade card".
I only tried once to get a card - everytime I wanna go in there - I borrow the paint sprayers trade card off him to get the discount.

I went and visited one of my Fathers old mates this morning - widowed chap abit younger than my Father (thats why he still alive).
He just had some painter and decorator in - did his hall and living room in a nice bungalow - it was awful - nothing caulked up - doubt if anything washed down or abraded/primed. Old man commented how pleased/nice it looked - I did the decent thing and agreed/said nothing. But it looked to me like the painter had used a live chicken instead of a brush/roller... I dare not ask the old man how much he paid....?
Fetched him some shopping - his daughter on holiday for two weeks - took his bins out - walked dog and cleared pooh off the lawn. ~Cooked him a full fried breakfast - made him eat it in front of me. Washed up... I can operate a frying pan lads...
(left him some plated up sandwiches in fridge under cling film).I go back in two days - Tues after work - old man wants liver & bacon - I asked him what he wanted. Thats what he asked for - "His wish is my command" - I can do that - few mashed spuds - out with frying pan - chop up some onions/liver/bacon. Just spoke to wifey/Julie about the food plan for Tues - she gonna make me some nice gravy to heat up.
He won't starve - Julie/wifey "rostered on" on for daily dog walks while the chaps daughter on holiday.... (plus she giving him his tablets/meds daily)
I do like feeding old people - but I yet to meet one that likes a runny egg - they all want them cooked to oblivion - hard and spoilt - my Mum and Dad were the same...

Fred, turning the discs would mean having a garage with a lathe and someone who knew how to drive it. You could count on the thumbs of one foot how many garages over here have a lathe, let alone an operator with the relevant paper qualifications to be allowed to use it.

Spot on. I remember being offshore and the lathe in the mechanical workshop was electrically locked as no one was deemed competent to use it. Driven by a supervisor out of his depth, blagging it, as he couldn't use one either. All great till there was a rush job to make a puller for a gas compressor in bits. He was told by his boss, if it wasn't unlocked and used by me (not part of his department) in the next hour he would be looking for a job as there was a chopper in 2 hours. Tool was made, and job done. Supervisor given job of training his team and making sure they were deemed competent, was all very amusing I thought, he had two so called technicians who seemed to think using a lathe wasn't a mechanical techs job.

It's shocking how under-equipped most garages are. As an individual i own more equipment than any garage i've worked at.
It's quite amusing watching the owners saying "How are we gonna do this?" While i'm stood there thinking "I have a tool for that at home.."

A couple of years ago there was mutterings of a visit by HSE so our 'HR' department (the boss's sister in law
) frantically started ransacking all the personnel files to make sure that anyone who did anything other than polish a chair with their ar*e was qualified and competent to do so.Our workshop had a lathe, pedestal drill, bench grinders, angle grinders, belt sander, welding gear, cordless power tools etc. etc. - all the stuff you need when you need it.
Apart from abrasive wheels certs, not one person in the company (including me) could show that they were trained or competent on any of it.
I tried to find any courses, like the one day abrasive wheel thing, where you might 'learn' how to use a lathe, cordless drill etc. - and found nothing. Yet there's nothing to stop you buying a welder, lathe, angle grinder etc. and letting rip at home with the same lack of skills/paperwork.
In the end the 'HR' woman went round the building putting 'Equipment out of service' and 'Do not use' labels on anything that might be able to hurt you (there was even talk of having to put a safety fence around the table-top 3D printer in case someone stuck a hand in while it was moving).

along with welding n fabrication, fitters jobs, tool making and bench fitting practices considered by many management as unskilled........
