strangely enough I know exactly what you mean. I used to do tech support for vinyl cutters and so often they never did EXACTLY what was asked or went too quick based on what they knew..

I have an SSD I am unable to boot from (as yet) so I am trying to get as much data from it as I can (after fitting it in the new PC as a SATA drive) BUT it keeps coming up with access restrictions.

I did actually gaz. I only use windows so again I assumed thinmgs..lol

as goes for mainboard swap amd will swap to amd or it will on mine but im not using windows 10/11 but it wont swap to amd to intel but it will swap from intel to intel when upgrading but that goes to the drivers that are saved within the install files from a non microsoft disk

its not even reaching the OS. just insert correct boot media. But that was not actualkly what I posted about. although I probably confused everyone. lol

Any reason you didn't turn off bitlocker encryption before removing the drive?...it's just a windows option I think in the OS.

I seem to remember they did add some bios lock stuff to the later versions (W11 I think with the new TPM chip on the boards)...I remember I spent an entire weekend trying to build a laptop with dual boot and in the end I gave up).

Couple of points about what he is showing First he has NO access to the drive he is "sorting", you do. second, the drive once "sorted" shows it's empty ! Yours has a win install.
Both of the above may not be relevent but I think the issue he has MAY be slightly different ?

I havent actually removed drive because the new one uses sticks so the SSD was just plugged back into the new mobo

I never even thought about bitlocker as I never use it. But yes I have been seeing stuff posted about it and it could be that.

Yes and thats why I am not even trying to get it booting yet till I have copied it.
Strange things is this robo copy says its found 1.3TB of files but its only a 500gig drive. so I am not optomistic. lol

Yup I can confirm this is exactly the case and exactly what happened to me!...would have totally wiped me out if I didn't have an off-site cloud backup (which worked faultlessly).

The other thing that got my interest last week...the bitlocker keys are usually backed up in the Microsoft cloud (default settings) and Microsoft has access to those keys!
