Copying and even accessing files from SSD boot drive.

I have an SSD I am unable to boot from (as yet) so I am trying to get as much data from it as I can (after fitting it in the new PC as a SATA drive) BUT it keeps coming up with access restrictions.

What is the collectives view on solving access issues that are not destructive.

And for that matter why does it happen??

Don't rush into it. There will be a 1001 apps/utilities to hack/access a "former" win boot disk.

well it got to 8% in around 10 mins and the dropped to 0 speed and sat there for the next hour. so I cancelled it and its still sitting there.

I can see me having to use a linux boot disk and copy all the files that way for now. lol

Try jsut coping a few folders rarther than the wold drive or big chuncks.

Mine seem to fail often with data becoming inaccessible. I still use them but now only for windows...I use a separate standard drive for data which is then backed up to the cloud.

First sign of trouble seems to be windows complaining that there's insufficient drive space!

I dont know anything about bitlocker. I certainly have not willingly enabled it.

what else do you want to know. I THINK its do do with permissions but just thought I would ask the question.

If it's bit locker then I'm pretty sure if you plug it into any other PC it would just ask you for the bitlocker key. I'm sure that's happened to me before.

Will windows be happy to boot from a new motherboard....I thought it had logs of components these days?

Bitlocker is a windows "thing" it encropts a drive to stop what you are trying ie you have taken a drive from one machoine and are trying to access it from another (rebuilt from origanl maybe) machine. It's a basci protection to stop a stolen drive or machine being access unless you can log onto machine and then access all that stolen data !
I think during the orignal install of windows it maybe enabled for atleast the C drive unless to untick a box. I now make sure this is disabled on my machines for exactley the reason/issue you could be having. The fact that you say you CAN copy just a small bunch of folders implys that the drive is seen by windows AND will allow coping of files. If you are simply highlighting drive "insert drive letter" and selecting "copy" then pasting it into a folder on another drive say called "back up of ssd" then you MAY fall foull of the many files in windows OR files in the many bits of installed software that are copy protected. That is why If I was to run into this issue I would select a chunk of the folders and select copy thgen past into the back up folder. You than may be able to isolate the file or folder that is stopping your progerss and skip it till the end.

then we found out that your changing motherboards something you didnt say int he first place

I know why it wont boot (new motherboard) but wanted backups before I tried playing with it.

but you never said that in your first post and you havent said what operating system that your using

as goes for bitlocker thats on by default by windows 10/11 so if the hard drive has bitlocker by default you need the original pc or the key code to unlock it or you turn it off watch out for updates turning it back on again

as goes for mainboard swap amd will swap to amd or it will on mine but im not using windows 10/11 but it wont swap to amd to intel but it will swap from intel to intel when upgrading but that goes to the drivers that are saved within the install files from a non microsoft disk

Its not even reaching that far. I suspect its something like MBR or whatever the new stuff is like Eufi or something. My guess is there was another disk with a boot manager on that then let the SSD boot. But as I took them all out it will no longer boot

I am now trying robo copy.. thanks for your write up its what I expected as I think I have encountered permissions before.

that hard drive is bios locked via bitlocker only a format will take care of it or install it back onto the original mainboard and backup
